Those race fans were not disappointed, as lntemational Championship Evens (lCE) had assembl€d the most Elented and accomplished lield of riders yet for its first-ever off-shore event. The first of two .ounds of four-lap points heats were won by Mount Zion, lllinois' Johnny Murphree, Shaun Russell from San los€, California, and Nick Daniels from l4attoon, lllinois. all on Hondas. The last heat of the first round saw an historic ice-racing moment, as Suzuki factory road-race and supermoto rider Robeno l.,laldonado became the first native Puerto Ricen to take th€ Ereen flag in this series. The second round of heats wa3 even more antense, as racers banled hard for the best trdnsfer positions to the main. The firs( one was won by Honda rider llark Cheza from Clio, l'lichiten. The next heat was a classic doozy of a race, as the lineuP included championship contenders Murphree and Rrssell, hard- chargin' Honda rider JarEd Me€s from Honeybrook, Pennqdvenia, and, for good rneasure, leSendary J.R. Schnabel from !1/est Bend, Wirconsin, ridinS a Yamaha. The lead changed s€veral times; RusEell was victorious.
