Haner finished eighth on his Superstock-spec GSX-R1000, and went into the Superstock race the following day with his eye on the podium. Unfortunately, Haner lost the rear end in turn one running iust outside the top five, and suffered a shoulder injur), in the process, We caught up with Haner at home in Texas, bored out of his mind, waitinS for his shoulder to heal enough to start rehab- cnr First off. what happ€n€d in thE crashP lohnhancr I went into tum one at Barber (Motorsports Park) and right before I was about to pick up the throt- tle, I lost the rear. I came around without warning and I was down. The crash was- n t really that bad urtil I got to the grav- el trap and started tumbling. Thank God that wall outside turn one was recently moved. I was nill hauling ass when I got to where the wall used to be and I would have been in bad shape if I had hit that. I mean it could have ended rny career, or er€n my life, had it been there. So l'm extremef thankful it was moved! cn:5o gou n€cdEd surg€rg. cor- rEct? iohnhaner: I damaged the tendons that hold the shoulder to the collarbone and to th€ bicep, and also hurt the rotator cup, lwent straight up to Tin8's and they said I had to have surgery. I had the sur- gery the following Monday and Ting said it went well. lt took about one and a hall hours and he said everything w€nt well. cn: HavE gou startEd to r€hab it at allP iohnhaner No, not yet. I'm going to stan on Monday. I actually took the sling off last week and Tuan, Ting's physical therapist guy, 8ot mad at me. He said I needed to leave it in the sling until I start rehab this next Monday. He said the problem isn't the surgery, it's me over- doing it too soon. lt's iust so hard to sit around and wait - I can't stand it. up injuF€d. iohnharEn No kidding, this iust suck. Menally I want to come back right now and start riding at the next round this next weekend, but there is no way my body can do it. I'm lust going cra.4f sifting around rny house doing nothing. I need to get out and start doing something; l'm going crary here. cn: Wh€n ar€ gou hoPing to comc bBCk? iohnhancr: I'm shooting for Road America. That will be about five weeks from the sur- gery but I really don't know. The [KVVS] team wants rne to take my time and come back healthy, and really to light for the podium and win. But t}lis is my race sea- son, you know and I just want to get back riding. The team is right though, l'm qut of the champi- onship now and I need to be healthy and come back lighting to put it on the podium. By Slcvq AtL. Roger Lee Hagden: Road to RecovEPg Kawasaki's Roger Lee Hayden has had a roller-coaster beginning to his 2006 sea- son. After winnin8 the first two AMA Supersport races of the year, Roger 8ot cn: Finst oft t€ll us about th€ cPash. r erleehayden: lt was just one of those things; I went up the inside of a lapped rider coming up the hill into turn three, and the next thing I knew he was into the back of me and we were in the wall. My foot kind of slid under the air {ence like a baseball slide. After, I thought there was something wrong with my boot because it was backward, but it was because my ankle was broken. I've been pretty down about it, but consider- ing where it happened, and how fast we were gqin8, I'm really pretty lucky that that's all that happened. cn: You had to hav€ surgErg. correct? rogerlechayden: Yeah, I flew up to Dr, Ting's place in Nor Cal the day after, and he put in l0 screws and one plate. The surgery went really well, There was also some ligament damage and that's what he was realty worried about. But he said ever),thing weht really well, and he was really happy with it. cn: I know th€n€ was a lot of talk about gou riding at California Sp€€dwag th€ follow- ing wc€k€nd. You €nd€d up not niding. Whg was that7 rogerleehayden: I realt wanted to Sive it a try Ting never told me I couldn't, but he did say it was a bad idea. He had put in a couple extra screws and extra stitch- es iust in case I Save it a try but h just wasn't a good idea. When I got down to So Cal, I got it checked out again and the doctors said, that with the ligament dam- age, if sornething happened to it I might never be able to move my ankle again. At 22 years old and the third race of the sea- son, it just was worth puttinS that in ieopardy. That really got me down, and I wasn't feeling very good there. Iater, I was readin8 some stuff about what hap. pened to Emesto Fonseca and, all thinSs considered, I'm pretry lucky- lt's racing - broken bones are just part of the game. cn: V€rU tru€. How is th€ r€cov- €rq comingP rogerleehayden: I had a small infection at the beginning, but that has cleared up and everything is goir6 really well, I was a little scared, iust because o{ what can h+pen with infections, but dEnkfully, that went away. Now I'm at the point where I can put some weight on it, and everything is going in the right direction. cn: Wh€n ar€ gou lookinq to com€ backP rogerleehayden: I'm shootinS to ride Supersport in the next round at lnfineon. l'm going to go, and just try and play it by ear and see how it goes. I want to go out there and try and get some points. I think I can ride in the top five, and then we'll see what happens. 8y Steve Atrds 7 a a cn: I know th€ f€€ling, th€r'c's nothing wors€ than b€ing laid fi 4 \I lr \ I \\ t v \/ |, ftr ,r(E| trHRT a o tl l t *. / toSether with a lapped rider in the second Superbike race at Barber Motorsports Park and ended up with a pretty badly broken right ankle.
