After being denied a possible win at a lo.al race the week before, Team Green Kawasaki racer Soule was amped about winning the VCGP "l love to pass people and didn't want to waste any time," Soule said afterward. "l put my head down and tried to catch up to the front." Since he was a late entry Soule started on the 27th row where l0 riders are grouped per row and are let go at lS-sec- ond intervals, so Soule got the chance to do some passing. Each riders' finish, how- ever, is time-adjusted- Vvlen the lirst row was turned loose on Saturday, Jason Lulis, from Brentwood, California, led the charge down the hill. At the end of lap one, Reno rider lason Alosi was first into the pits, lollowed by Dave Mowery and Ryan Toomey, a Sparks, Nevada, area high-school student. When the second lap ended, Steve Garnett was first with Steve Tichenor, Soule, Gordon Ward, Quinn Cody and Honea in hot pursuit. Late in the race a crash eliminated Toomey's chances at his best-ever flnish. Fortunately, the l6-year-old wasn't hurt in the incident that sent him slidin8 along the course. Garneft saw his chances end with a flat, and a spill by Tichenor erased his sev- eral-minute advantage over Soule, who swept past a short time later. Not exactly knowing what position he was in, Soule kept his bike pinned on what he thought was his final lap of the four-hour race. "l gave it my all on the last lap, and even wadded up a couple of times, and was surprised when I had to do an extra lap," he said. Soule arrived at the finish area about 30 to 45 seconds befo.e the four-hour mark, so he had to do a fifth lap. Soule's official elapsed time was four hou6,59 minutes and 5l seconds, while second- placed Quinn Cody's time was 4:00:38. A very tired Soule claimed the victory followed by Cody, Honea, Ward and Tichenor. Over 300 Novice, Women and Vintage class riders showed up for Sunday's race.
