Longtime Daytona Beach News Journal reponer Godwin Kelly wrote a column recently on the retirement of Daytona lnternational Speedway's Gary Van Voorhis, who retired from the speedway on March 3l after 17 yeaE. Van Voorhis says his best memory ofthe Speedway was the evening Dale Earnhardt won the 1998 Daytona 500. He drew the short straw to baby-sit Earnhardt's black number-three Chevrolet from the garage to Daytona USA, where it would sit on display for l2 months. "l had to shadow the car from the time the race ended," he said. Vallejos spent much of his pro- fessional and personal life on or around motorcycles. Rob was 34 and as survived by hi5 wife, Antoinette, and a young daughter, Sarah Belle. Veatch Motorspons rider David Estok rode a Buell Firebolt xB l2R to a second- place finish at the American Sportbike Rac- ing Association (ASRA Thunderbike National at the Road America course on Sunday, April23, according to Harley- Davidson. Hal's Speed Shop rider Dan Bilansky was third. also on a Buell Firebolt XB l2R. The race was won by Ed Key on a Suzuki, who also won several Champi- onship Cup Series (CCS) support races during the weekend. Estok, Bilansky and Deeley Harley-Davidson/Buell Canada rider Steve Cre er also used various ASRA and CCS races to test new components on the Buell XBRR developed since its com- petition debut at Daytona.
