The opening moto of the Mxl class was a classic battle between the two old rivals, EverB and Tortelli. Evers led early, wth Tortelli on his tail. EverB continued to ride safely in front, not taking any risks, while Tonelli pushed for a way past. At times, the contrast of riding styles wa5 very evident, as Everts seemed on cruise con- trol and Tortelli on the ragged edge. On lap I0, TorGlli made a pass, but Everts got him straight back. The two continued to battle hard, although Everts got the verdict from Tonelli, who fell but still got second, and CAS Honda rider Ken De Dijckei who had started off around lfth and ended upthird. ''That lirst moto, Sebastien was pushing hard, and I had to ride defensive." Ever6 said. "He is very aggres- sive. At the moment he passed me, I passed him back; that was an important move." The second HXI moto began with Tonelli taking the lead and Evers in second place. Everts was pushing onship and a possible 100 Grand Prix victories. GoinS l- I on the dax this wa5 - once again - a demonstration of Everts beinS Mister Smart, as the Belgian rider never pushed too hard and let his rivals make the mistakes. Second overall was Spanish rider Jonathan Barragan, on a KTM, and third place went to Kevin Strijbos, on a Suzuki. ln the l.'lx2 class, KTM'S Tyla Rattray also recorded his third win of the season, flnishing ahead of Christophe Pourcel and Antonio Cairoli. Both Everts and Rattray now enjoy early and comfortable points leads in their respective classes. ln what might just go down a5 one of the best Grand Prix races of all time, Everts and rival Sebastien Tortelli went at it in the opening l'4X I race and. once again, the winner was the man, Everts, while Tortelli once again picked himself up off the ground and limped back to the KTM team truck. Tortelli crashed on the las lap of the classic race, inlurinS his ankle, but like the true warrior he is, he lined up for the start of the second MX I race. 42 MAY 3, 2006 .
