Borber Birm Round 2 April 23, 2006 AMA Repsol Lubricants Superstock Series Aaron Yates holds ofT Jamie Hacking at Barber BY HENNY RAY ABRAI{s PHoros BY NEEoN & RtEs V*'""-'"'"'*i:rm[* I trre n itor Lubricants Super- I stock final on a sunny after- noon at Barber lYotorsports Park. The Georgian spent two laPs sizing uP Yamaha's Jamie Hacking before pouncing in the downhill-hairpin turn four- Yates drove up the inside of Hacking on the corner exit, smoking his rear Dunlop as he tried to drive away. But Hacking stuck to him and raced to the line, coming uP short by 0.135 of a second, Yamaha's Jason DiSalvo was third. "l knew that the race was Soing to come down to the end, and I was iust hoping that by going a little bit harder in the beginning, that maybe l'd have a liftle bit more at the end," Yates said. "l don't know if that was really the case, but I just tried to keep a real 8ood, consistent pace going. lt iust feels really good to get out here and 8et a win on my GSX-R.'' Yates had started the race in fourth before passing Team M4 EMGO Suzuki's Geoff May on lap seven, then Yamaha's Disalvo on lap 15. All the while. Hacking was out front after taking the lead from the very start, "l wasn't being patient, I was trying to go. They just had a little jump on me," Yates said. "fu the race went on. the bike was feeling good everywhere. I iust got a little more confldence. I saw those two guys staned struggling a little bi( getting in, and maybe I iust saved my tire enough to get through there a little bit better.'' Yates took nearly six seconds off the 2005 race time to set a new record of 24 minutes, 5l seconds for the l7-laP, 40.45-mile.ace. His average speed was 94.406 mph. He also took second in the points standings from DiSalvo. Hacking leads with 69, four more than Yates and six up on his teammate DiSalvo- "l knew Aaron yatesl was going to be tough to hold off," Hacking said. "l kept geftin8..- in the tight left down there, I kept gefting in there pretty hard, and backing it in. and realry couldn't 8et it tumed. Going in there on the last lap, I tried to really make an effort to get in there and get turned and get out of there." Hacking said, he looked over and "there he was. He was already spinninS, and I picked up the gas, and I staned spin- ning, and we were spinning and wobbling out of there. He drove me. I thought maybe I could get another chance at him up here, but we had that lapper in the way, and iust... it was iust over for me. I was iust happy to bring it home and fin- ish." Disalvo lost touch with the leaders in the flnal two laps. Traffic and worn tires were to blame, "l iust decided to play it safe and bring it home, rather than do something sillx" he said. 'iAgain, that's just one of my biggest things in this class, is, I feel, I look back at it now and hey, I played it safe- That's one of the things I said I wasn't going to do in the race, but I ended up doing it aD,way." DiSalvo said he thought about making a run at Hacking midrace, but never 8ot the chance. "l don't really know where I would've made the pass," he said. I was doing, probably-.. the lap or two after Aaron came by, that kind of threw a wrench in my plans.'' l'4ay held founh, finishinS three sec- onds up on Erion Honda's Josh Hayes- Hayes had Yamaha's Eric Bostrom to con- tend with until about the l2th lap when Bostrom fell behind.
