hat did we learn
at
the
AMA Superbike
Championship
dou-
bleheader at Barber
Motorsports
Park?
We
learned
that Yoshimura Suzuki's
Ben Spies
is a viable contender
for the
crown
held
by
six-time champion
Mat
Mladin.
From the
pole,
Spies
won both
races
-
all
three if
you
count
both seg-
ments of Sunday's
red-flag-interrupted
event
-
a
first for Spies, and
a first for a
Flladin teammate.
"lt
was
a
pretty
big shock,"
Spies said
on Sunday
evening.
We learned that
Mladin is very lucky.
There
was an unlucky
close call with a
backmarker
that ended any
hope ofvicto-
ry
on Saturday
and forced
him to settle
for second.
But Sunday's race
was the
one that left
many shaking their
heads.
