A A S ( tefan Everts recorded his 89th career Grand Prix victory after going 3- I at the Grand Prix of Spain. It was also his second win of the young GP sea- son, giving him a quick lo-point lead over young Estonian rider Tanel Leok, who finished second ( a I / a a (, , t overall in Spain. Perhaps more importantly for Everts, he now enioys a modest l5-point advantage over former World champ Sebastien Tortelli, who finished sixth overall on the day. Everts came close to winninS both motos in Spain, but a small crash in the first moto was his undoing. The Belgian was leading when he went down and lost a number of posi- tions. He managed to 8et up to third before the checkered flag came out. Everts made sure that he did not repeat that same mis- take in the second moto. The defending champ 8ot out in front early on his Yamaha and stayed there. He felt som€ pressure from Leok early on but managed to steadib/ pull away as the Tace wore on. "The first race, lcould not find my rhythm," Everts said. "l was ridinS tense [and] I made a mistake and crashed. lwas not happy to give away the first place. "ln the second race, I made a holeshot and rode consis- tent and very relaxed," Everts continued. "l could push and not get tired; I felt good in the second race. I just changed something between my ears for the second race. ' Leok ended up second overallwith 2-2 motos finishes. ln the first moto, Leok, on the lan De Groot Kawasaki, inherit- ed the lead when Everts went down, and Suzukis Kevin 22 APRtL26,2oo6.
