The
Honey Lake course
was undoubtedly
the most techhical
of the series
thus
far. Normally,
the Honey Lake

the end of the series,
in the fall,

To inake things

to ry something
different thit

and had the

When the
gate
dropped,
Team ZigTy
Yamaha's
newest recruit,
Bobby Garrison,
grabbed the holeshot
and led the
way
through
the
Honey Lake obstacles.
Kiedrowski settled into
second, ahead of
Garrison's
Zip-Ty
teammate
Russell
Pearson, Honda's
Robby Bell, and
Hughes-
Garrison was
understandably
stoked to
get
the
holeshot.
"l
knew I needed
to
8et
a
good start,"
he said.
"l
didn't
want to be stuck
behind
anyone
goinS
into the creek
sections and
The
Waterfall.
lf you let the leaders
get
away from
you in WORCS
racinS, then
you're
done,
so being up
front was awe-
some.
I hope I can
do that more often."
While things
were
going
great
for
Garrison. the
sarne could not be
said for
his teamrfiate
Ty Davis,
who
got
bumped
in the
first turn and found
himself
in the
back
of the
pack.
He checked
in in l6th
place
after the
first lap. He
would spend
the rest
of the race
picking
off as many
riders as
he could.
The Kawasaki
guys didn't
have it much
bette(
either. lbam Green's
Nathan
Woods, Destry
Abbott and Lance Smail
were all hanging
just
inside
the top 10, and
Ricky Dietrich, on the
Team
Carter
Powersports-backed
Kaw-asaki,
was even
further back, barely
inside
the top 20.
Meanwhile, Garrison
was enioying
the
fruits of
his spectacular start, and
the
Y2250
pilot
continued
to
lead the charge,
but
HuShes was about to
pay
him a
visit.
Before
long,
Hughes was knocking
on
Garrison's back door,
and the
Suzuki rider
invited
himself into the lead, without
much
resistance
from the
young
Yamaha
pilot.
Once
in the lead,
Hughes steadily
pulled
away,
He soon had
about a lS-sec-
ond lead on
Garrison,
and another
Hughes route was
in the works.
But that
all changed on the
sixth lap, when
Hughes
came
to The
Waterfall.
This time a slower
rider was ahead
of
him,
and the lapper was struggling
to
get
the
rocky climb. Rather than
wait for
the lapper
to
get
out of the
way, Hughes
attempted
the climb anyway
-
big
mistake.
He came to
The Waterfall with a
ls-sec-
ond
lead and
left The Waterfall
in
third
place
and
25 seconds back.
