Tucker ran out front for (he first nine lap6 of the opening moto on Saturday mornint before Rogers w"s able to catch him from his back-of- the-pack start to make the pass. Tucker reteliated with a last-turn pasa of his own to narrowly win the moto. Robert Stone was roughl). l0 se.onds back in third, over Ron Verbeck and Kenny Campbell. Campbell put his Suzuki out front when the gate dropped for moto two, ahead of Ken Arnold and Verbeck. Tucker and RoaeB both suffered bad starts, but by th€ end of lap two they were up into fourth and fifih, respectively. A couple of laPs later, Tucker was out front, with Roters tlued to his back fender. RoEe6 slipped past Tucker iust aft€r tettint the white flag ao earn the win by a couple of bikelen$hs. Stone was a much closer third this time, followed by Campbell and Amold. The $ird and linal moto on Sattrday was all Tucker's, as h€ led every inch aboard hii CR450E RoSers gated irEide the top l0 and battled with Campbell and Ston€ en route to his seaond- place linish. Stone was once atain third at the checkers, over Mark Pledger and Camp'bd|, Campb€ll shot into an immediate lead in the openint moto on Sunday, and he would run out front for a couple ofcircuits before PledSer dropped him back to second. Pledger's r€ign lasted a couple of laps before Tucker took over for Sood- Rogers steadily worked his way up into a runner-up finish, followed by Bill Lea, Campbell and Verbeck. The {ifth and final moto of the weekend saw a race-lon8 battle over the top spot belween RoSers and Tucker, with Tucker makin8 a last-lap pass stick co rake the hard- fought win. Lea Eot around Pledger at the mid\ray point to claim third at rhe finish, over Pledger and Campbell. Kawasaki-mounted Ken l"lcca.thy won four out of live motos to earn th€ Over 50 Novice- class victory Gar), Doll used 2-5-2-2-2 rides for second overall on the weekend, toppinS the 5-3'l-3-l finishes of Richard Stuelke- l'1ike Bonenfanr baEled all weekend with l4ark f4artin in the Over 50 Amateur ranks. Bonenfanr used a l-3-3-l-l tally to edge out the 4- l- l-2-2 score of l4artin by a single point to claim the overall. Third went to Mark Schuster (2-4-2-3-l). The Over 70 Experts were only required ro run four moto5. and Honda rider Jim Denevan got to the checkers first in each of rhose four races. Gene Hrobsky claimed second with four consecutive second-place rides, over Cunis Johnson (5-4-3-3) and Asker Larnkiaer (7-7-4-4). BY ORCG RoBERrsoN Vet X Winter Notionol series Round 5: Rd.etown 395 MX Pork Benskin Steals TWo Wins ADTIANTO, CA, TAR. 5 The Vet X winter Senes rolled past the mid- I way poinc with the fifth round at Racetown 395 MX. A bi8 improvement in the weather condkions lured many riders out to the tra.k. More than 260 riders showed up to do battle on the cool, sunny day in the desen. The Racetown track crew made several layout changes to the tra.k, including a long, high-speed straiShtaway and an off-camber uphall ri8ht turn, among others, creating a lonS and fast layout. The tra(k conditions were groomed to perfection with soft-loam condkions to l.ick offthe day's races. lohnny Benskin walked away from round five with two class wins, in the 28-35 and 36-42 Novi.e .lasses, He won three out of four motos throughout the day but placed second in the remaining race- ln the 28-35 Novice class, Shawn walls Eot out to the early lead, running away with the first-moto win. Benskin was unable to catch him and came across the line in secofld, followed by Chad Hubbard, who brouEht his Yamaha in lhird. ln moto tvvo, Mark Carlstrom took the early lead. while Benskin was back in lifth on the first lap. He chased Carlstrom the entire moto, and ofl the last lap he was able to pass for the lead and take the win at the checkered flag- Carlstrom took second place. and Dustin Hiniker was third. The overall winner was Benskin, with 2-l flnishes. Chad Hubbard was second with 5-3 finishes, and third went ro Hiniker with 8-3 finishes. genskin staked his claim to both motos in the 36-42 Novice class. Enzo/Fox Racing/ NoToil/Ct2-backed Mark Bellman pursued Benskin both times out. Bellman worked his way up to second in both motos, making a charge !o catch Benskin- Both riders pushed hard in the second moto. as both wanted that overall win.
