nice
touch by the hosting club.
The first section of the
day
was
pretty
standard
fare that managed to take at least two
points
lrom
the riders at check
two before the short motocross
portion
that was thrown into
the section
-
iust fot
fun.
As the day
progressed.
it was obvious that the
riders who were comfortable racing
in the sandy
conditions were
going
to rise to the
top today.
Check three
managed
to catch a few riders run-
ning a little hot
and caught them off
guard
for
that
dreaded
"two"
that comes with a burned
check.
The next two checks were
part
of the long section
that consisted of some
tight
woods,
a midpoint
check, a check at the end of the section. and no
resets
to
help
out, so
points
continued
to
fiount,
The next section
proved
relatjvely trouble-free
for
most of the riders, as zeroes were the order of
the day.
At
check nine, Lafferty and challenger
Blair
Bersano were the only riders
to record a zero.
Bersano,
a native of Pinconning, Michigan, was
obviously comfortable in the New
Jersey
woods
and was riding well.
After check I I,
all but the A and AA riders were
done for the day and,
at
the
split, Lafferr/, Bobbitt,
Edmondson, Rich Lafferty and Bersano were out in
front of the AA class and setting the
pace.
The final section
-
a tight,
grueling,
25-mile,
zero-reset affair
-
would
play
a
part
in
the
final
out-
come of the enduro, Without
a doubt, the toughest
section of the day took its toll on the riders, as the
points
added up at the midpoint and final
checks.
At
the midway check, Lafferty and Bobbitt
each card-
ed
an I l,
but
Lafierty
pulled
into the checkout
a
minute faster than runner-up Bobbitt,
ln the end, the champ was back on top, leading
a
KTM sweep, which included Bobbitt, and Mike's
brother, Rich. Bersano took fourth. his
best
National finish of the
year
aboard his
new KX450E
Former NETRA Enduro champ Anthony Geraci
ended up fifth.
An added bonus for the riders and all in
atten-
dance was the
presence
of off-road legend
John
Penton, who was obviously
thrilled to see KTM nab
the top three
positions.
"The
club here always
puts
on
a
Sreat
event, and
today was no exception," Gas Gas rider and
even-
tual seventh-overall finisher Leonard Keen said of
the enduro.
"l
felt
good
all day. My EC250 worked
great.
I tried to stay hydrated and avoid
problems
most of the day, but the last section was really tight.
so
you
couldn't stand up,
but
if you
sat,
you
ran the
risk of
getting
cramped up. AII in all, a
good
day"
The win
puts
Lafferry atop the series points
standings, but Bobbitt has shown
great
speed and is
making
a statement oI his own,
letting
the AIYA and
others know that he intends to have somethinS to
say about the inscription on the champion's trophy
at the end of the season-
