The AHA was testing new track markers that
were installed
alont the whoop section at the
Daytona
Supercross. The roughly 3-Ioot-high
markers
are
made of plastic
and are desitned to
fold
over and then
pop
back up when a rider runs
oll the track. They're derigned
to
make
the race-
tracks safer afid improve the appearance of the
racing facilit,.
The
'Acerbis
track markers" are the brainchild
of the AMA3 motocross race director, Steve
Whitelock.
"This
is nreant for the outdoors; I designed k and
came up with the idea and told Acerbir what I want-
ed to do,"
Whitelock
said Friday.
"l
turned the
design over to the them and said,
'Go
for it, buiH
me
one.'The
idea
is. we
line
the outdoor racetrack
with them, and they're designed to fold over real
easy.
Today,
[Chad]
Reed went off the track and ran
over about
six of these, and they
iust
hopped right
up. They're made
out of a couple of different kinds
of
plastic,
[ike]
fender material. Acerbis is
going
to
sponsor us for 45,000 of them, and we're
goinS
to
give
3500 to each one of our 12
National
race-
track, afld lve're
toing
to
have like
2000
for
emer-
tency
spares. All of our
3ood
National
track are
toinS
to sErt usint these instead of hay
bales.
We're
toant
to use hay bales
yyhere
they belonS - for
pro-
tection; we're
toint
to use these as track markers.
We're tryirE to
8et
rid
of
hay
bales for track rmrk-
ers. I think it's going
to be a
8reat
thing for our out-
door tiacks. You're
Soing
to add
iome safet,,."
At Daytona, the prototype markers
v/ere col-
ored britht yellow but there will
be other colors.
"They're
also
toing
to do a special
serie6 where
you can chante the color, where you can have
a
red
zone, or a blue zone, or a
Sreen
zone, etc,"
Whitelo
