.EVENTEI Northland Motonsports/AMRA Natlonal Har€ Scrambl€s Round a Holg Jo€ HaP€ Scrambl€s Dietrich Does the Trick! PHOTO BY XANA HUTCHINSON llAIrUrtOIH, AZ, tEB. I t ftte Holy loe Hare Scrambles held in Ham- I moth, Arizona, was an event of record- brqkinS proportions. fuaky Oietrich of Kawasa- ki took the overall win from second-place {inisher Robbie Jeiks by a mere four seconds. Dietrich started l5 secoods behind.lenk. but was able to make up tl|e difference throughout his three laps, €rrentuali/ beatinS Jenk by time. The race was broken into two separate events, with the Novice and SporB.nan riders (or "C" rijers) racinS in the mominS for a total of two hours, ard the Arnateur, Expeft a.d Pro riders ('A' and "8" riders) betinnint in the afternoon, The C r&e went ofr withou! a hitch, but the A/B race ran into sonre diflicuhies in the technical A loop 6at wEs added to the .ourse. There vr'as a nasly hilLlimb tl1at saw a ,lo.rider pileup at the base of the hill. After Pro rider Brian Garrahan suffered a serious in,ury (Garrahan suffered a shattered ankle after a fellow Pro rider b€came impatient with the pileup and went off course, side-swipint Garrrhan and pushing him ofi his bike and down the hill), AMRA olncials d€cid to call dle race and do a restart in order to be fair ro all riders The €ce was originally slated to have a three-hou. time limit, but the restart had a Grand Prix-style finish: best of three laps. Unfonunatel, Jenk had been leadinS the lirst race, but he ended up second in ahe restart. 'Overall, I have to say the day went pretty well." AMRA president Adam Johnston concluded, "especially since there were things rhat happened [that were] beyofld our control. ln regard to the restart, jt was unfortunate that it came to that point, but we did the best we could under the circumstances, We hope all the racers understand. AMA conSressman Don Hood, who ;s also the president of Arizona Trail Riders, is no strrnger to putting on a Naoonal event, vvhen it came to the prof€ssionalism and orSanizatjon that Al4M had with the Holy joe Hare Scrarnbles, he cornmended them on d|eir ef{orts. 'A National event is a whole new ballgame, but [AMRA] really scepped it up and did the job," Hood said- 'A very nice mix of traal, washes and road made for a great course. lt was really only tough from an endurance standpoinr, but I think that let everyone find their own pace and then just have a Bood race." Local rock star Todd.Johnson, who (ame out o{ a two-year losing streak to win the competitive Over J0 A class, agreed wilh Hood. ''I was lucky enough to 8et the holeshot, and then I thought for sure because of the dust I could stretch our a lead," Johnson commented, "bur then disaster, with a rear flat! I kept char8ing for the last lap and barely squeaked out rhe win by only seven seconds. "The Over 30 A class this year is so stacked, there are l0 guys who have a chance at winning, which makes for some close racinE," lohnson added. The next AI9RA event has chanSed lo€tion due to Arizona s record-breaking no-rain situation. but it is still on che schedule and should prove ro be another epic event.
