Corder's fourth was his best WORCS finish to date in four attempts. But the day again belonged to Hughes, though he had to work harder forthis one than he did at the last race- "l got a good start, and I tried to pull out a lead in the beSinning like normal, and I looked back and Mike's right there - he's rEht there,'' Hughes said, "lt was a rough race, man. we went 95 percent for two hours, and that's tor-rgh. This track - | think ir's one of rhe roughesr rracks I ve ever ridden in my life. lt was rough, rough, rough, rough. "But lthink when a track gets real challenging ahd rough, I think Mike and I have a little bit of an advantage, because we have so much experience. l've raced for 23 years, and he's proba- bly raced for damn close to 301 So we've almost got 50-something years of experience between the two of us, and that pays off!'' CX Botby Gorison snu.k onlo the podium ofier getting o gift from Ricky Dietrich. rlr Mike Kiedrowski credited runninS a stiffer suspension setting to his improvement from the first round in Phoenix. 'At Phoenix my bike setup was terrible," he said. "lt was real soft and everythint, but I've been out tesrint with RG3 and went out a few Limes and got some stifler suspension. I think we're ,ust pushing a lot harder this year. I got it to where I like it - kind of like I was last year - so that made a big difrerence." Teammate Ryan Hu8hes, however, went the other way. "l go a little softer than my National MX seftings," he said. "l have the same basic settings, but iust a teeny bit soft- er, iust because it's tlvo hours, and that takes a toll on you - beinS real stiff. I leamed that in the betinning at Mesquite last year]; it v/ss just too stiff." r Ausralia's Glcnn Keamey tuned up for the GNCC opener by racing at Taft on his FMF/ECC/Moose RM250 and was the first two-stroke in - finishing ninth, "l just wanr- ed to Eet a race in under nry belt before Florida [and the GNCC opener], because I haven't raced since the lronman in Craw- fordsville, lndiaoa, October last year,'' he said. "l iust wanted to 8et the buSs out of the system. You can practice all you want, but ther€'s nothing better than a race. lt was good. I forgot how fast and rough thel are, but it was a lot oI fun. l'd like to do anothe. one lder in the year if it fits in, but I'll corne with a proper suspension setup instead of GNCC stuff next time. That made it a lilde difficul! here. This is proba- bly more physically demanding than GNCC in that the way you've got to hang on, because it'i so high-rpeed." lmrnediately after flnishing, the lirst l0 bikes had to be retested for sound at !h€ FMF box \lan. One bike that obvioGly was- nt goingto pass was I lth-place linislrer Bobby Bondi' HaxxisfzlT/t4oose KTM 300 XC, which had a huge hole in the exhaust pipe. "l hit something, and it cracked around the midway poim of the race, l'd say, lt was still running good, but it started losinS power slowly and slowly. Then the last lap. it blew a chunk out - a big chunk - and I thought I was going to be pushing it across the finish." Briefly... Mv Owru FLnce 5 Lance Smail 6th Place "The race was good," KawasakiTeam Green's lance Smailsaid. "The maiority of the iace I was flfth and founh and felt reelly 8ood for 90 percent ofthe race. The last l0 minutes I went from fourth to sixth. I Eot passed the last lap by a couple tuys there. I iust hit the w-all. I was hoping I could make a charye on Rjcky there the last lap; I was holding Gafiison and Davis at bay. I had an hour and 50 minutes in me, I didn't have the last 10. Physically, I fel( Sood a ma,ority of the time. I don't think it was cardiovascular - | think it was lust mus- cle fatigue. I kind of'bonked'." 6 Ty Davis 7th Place The captain o, the Montclair Yama- hazip-Ty Racing/Moose squad, Ty Davis, was part of a tightly bunched group, fighting for third place dur- ing the hst half of the ra.e, but he ended up sevemh. "lfelt likc I should've been third. b{t at the end --. I didn't get tired, but I was fallinS off the pace. I warn't as quick Obviously that was be€use I was tired, but I didn't feel tired. But I wasn't on the 8a5 soon enouSh, and lwas losing a aouple seconds here and there; that's all it took. Bobby Garrison cauSht me at the end - he rode really well - but I should've been able to stay with him, a.d I didn't. He iust kind ofsnuck away." 'l O Destry Abbott 8th Ptace Team Green's Destry Abbott 8ot a Sood start on his Pro CircuivDunlop,THoR KX450E but he lost contact with the pack after a while. 'At the 4s-minute mark, I had to pit - we were runnint a smaller tank - then for some reason, when I took off, they realized the dD/ break wasn't working, so the next lag, I had to come in again and lost more time. Then a few laps latei we pitted one more time, so I pitted three times, and it was iust kind o, frustrating for me. The bike was workint really good and I felt good. At the end o{ the race, I put a hard charye on and finished - | think - one second behind Ty and two seconds behind Lance." 32 nouuy eett t 3th Place After runnint well inside dre top 10. Precision Conc.pts/Pro Honda OilVFox CRF450X rider Robby Bell of the Honda Off-Rnad Teem dropped back suddenly and would finish l3th. While chasing Bobby Bonds and Ty Davis, Bell said, "l didn't even feel hitting some$ing, and I totally lost feeling in my front brake. lt was definitely a rock, because there's a ding in the front wheel. lt's just bad luck," He pit- ted soon afterward and lost tirne Setting the system bled. "Because I didn't remember hit(ing anything, it was a liftle bit longer pit stop than it probabt could've been," he said, 'After having that liftle downtime, the adrenaline goes away, and I totalry started feeling how tired I was, becaur I was really good up urtil that time. Once I left the pits, rny arms got tired, rny legs 8ot tired." I NathanWoods DNF After getting a good start on his Pro Ci.cuivDunlop/Moose-backed KX450E Team Greerls Nathan Wood! knew he was in the hunt - umil disaster struck the two-time WORCS champ. "The Iirst lap I dropped dovm the downhill in the new ofl-road section," he said. "They said there weren't any holes in there, and I went to the side of it a little bic, and I hit one bi8 hole. I went over the bars. a.nd I don t know if that's when I bent my rear sprocket. I kep! going- I heard some noise and did a whole lap, then my sprocket broke in half.
