espite riding
most of the
season with nagging injuries,
.losh
Demuth came
into the
final round of the
I l-round
BooKoo Arenacross Cham-
"This year
was one of the toughest
yea.s
l've
had in racing," Demuth added.
"lthink
I
only raced one event where
I wasn't busted
up.
lt
j'rst
was a real struggle all
year
long."
Standing between
Demuth and the
championship was
Fun
Center
TLD/PPG
Slrzuki's
Shane Bess. Bess had also had his
up6
and downs durinS the
season and came
into Tulsa with second
place
in
the
overall
points
standings
and was hoping to score
maximum
poinB,
with the chance
that
Demuth would finish
far
enough
back to
surrender
fie
points
lead
-
and the champi-
onship.
However, Demuth's determination
and GPS Racing/Storm Lake
Honda's
Michael Blose's
speed in the 250 class
would be
too much for Bess to contend
with in the race for the title.
ln Friday's
250 rnain, Demuth
Sated
in
third
place
on his
Team Babbift's Enxus Oil
Kawasaki. but
his from end washed out in
the first tum, leaving
him
at
the
back
of the
pack.
That left Bess to lead the fleld on the
opening lap:
however, Blose took command
of the
race on lap wvo
with
a
solid
pass
in
the left-hander before
the rhythm section
and held on for the win, his
founh of the
year.
Eess
maintained second, while Sano
SystemvPPc/Motion
Cydes
Yamaha-rider
Colt Humphries,
from nearby l'4orris,
Oklahoma, thrilled the crowd
with
a third-
place
linish- Demuth finished adisappointrng
a
pionship
Series
in
Tulsa,
Oklahoma
with a
6l-point lead in the Eeries
standings and
enough determina(ion
to
put
the
pain
behind
him for one last weekend.
His
plan
going
into the Tulsa race was to
nurse his
recently broken
hand long enough to
get
past
enough
riders during Friday
night's
two main events to maintain a
4l
-point
cushion in
the standings, which would
clinch the title
for him on the first
night of
the two-night competition. He ended
up
uking an
llth-place linish in the 250 main
event and a
lifth in
the
450 main on
Friday,
which
were
iust
enough
points
to lock up
both the
overall championship
as well as
the 450 Championship,
"We just
wanted to make the
main
evenB here and basica.lly
maintain our lead,"
Demuth
said after
Friday's
event.
"We
needed to finish the
night widl 4l
points
to
wrap it up and we were able to do
that. ln
the 250
class, I struSgled a litde bit and did-
n't
get
the linish I
wanted to, but we made
up for it on the
450
and
got
the
points
that
we needed."
Demuth
retumed on Saturday
night
to
claim the 250 Championship
as wEll.
the race.
"l
just
had ridiculously bad
luck
during
the
year
-
lappers taking me out
while I was leadirE and stuff. I don't
look
at
it like he beat
me. i
just
wanted to
have a
really strong second
half of the season and I
did."
