Each rider now has three wins of the six-race- old AMA series, but Team lYakita Suzu- ki's Carmichael still enjoys an I l-point lead. thanks to Stewart's meltdown last week at Anaheim lll, where Stewart fell three times and finished eighth. So far, that's been rhe diflerence of the series. Nearly 70,000 fans filled the stadium to see the last of the five California rounds, and they certainly didn't come away dis- appointed after witnessinS one of the closest races yet. Carmichael got out in front early and Stewart stalked him the whole way, keeping the pressure tumed up but never really seemed to be in a big hurry to take the lead. lnstead, Stewart hung back in second and rode a patient and calculated race, spending most of the main event sizing up Carmichael and deciding where and when he was going to make his move, Stewart eventualb/ pulled the triSSer on the ISth lap, which gave Carmichael little time to try to mount a comeback, Finishing well back in third was Team Yamaha's Chad Reed. ObviouslT Stewart rebounded well after his Anaheim lll disaster. "l never lost my confidence," Stewart said. "l know all the work we put in all week and during the offseason, so I knew I just needed to relax out there. Last weekend. I kind of over-rode the track and I had a few bobbles.'' Kawasaki race team manaSer Mike Fisher admitted that Stewart was pretty disappointed after the Anaheim lll race. "He was pretty bummed," Fisher said, "but he quickly put it out of his mind and put it behind him.'' And Carmichael too. Carmichael was gracious in defeat.
