At the opening round of the Rocky Mountain ATV/MC World Off Road Championship Series near Phoeoix, Hughes grabbed the lead right off the start and held on to it throughout the two-hour race, making the win on his FMF/ECC/Moose-sponsored RM- 2450 seem almost easy. KTM'5 Kurt Caselli, however, was pretq/ much the only rider in the crowded Pro-class field that even came close to matchjng Hughes' torrid pace, but when he stalled his FMF/Michelin/Moose-backed 450 XC after stop- ping for fuel, it wiped away any chance he had of mountinS any kind of an attack. lnstead, he was Iorced to charge back up again to take back the runner-up position he had held before the flame out. At the finish, Caselli finished 19 seconds behind Hughes. Second-year Pro Ricky Dietrich took advan- tage of Caselli's mistake, and also passed Suzuki's l'4ike Kiedrowski to hold second late in the race. However. he couldn't hold off Caselli, surrender- ing second place with a lap to go and finishinS l5 seconds behind Caselli for third place on his J- /' l" I \ I , b. t 1 I !:! E T I \ tri t t \ l'
