I6.17 Vamaha-mounted Josh Hill was clearly rhe I dom, nant perlormer at the I'fth annual Nonhw€st Pro-Am Challen8e. as the l6_r€ar_ old from Yohcalla rotally trounced the competi_ tion in both ofthe two 25-lap races held on the two consecutive nights of racing. Hill lapped all the wa), up to second-place, winninS by a "country mile" on the back-to-back niShts at Forster Livestock Pavrlion in Salem. Hill wast€d little time nabbing the lead in Friday's Pro-Am moto, which lined uP 25 riders, all vying for the top payoff of $700 from a purse of $2500. Hill ran at the head of the pack from the 8et-Eo, with Adam Metzler as his cl$est challenger. Although lt'letzler was well behind Hill at the finish, he fared much better than his fellow AFIA National rider Pete Sannan, who. like HeEler, is a first-year P.ol Sannan crashed in the first rum on the oP€nint lap and, despite coming from three laPs b€hind. llnished a remarkable ninth. ''I weflt down on the first lap," a deiected Sannan said. k took me three laps to 8et goinS again, brit I picked otr a bunch of ride6 each lap and ended up ninth, so I was Pretty hepPy in that regard, iust to finish in the loP 10." Third went to Honda-mounted Joey Lan.aster, the top-plecinS lntermediate rider, who was followed by Pro rider Anthony Cerruti, Maft Fouts, Kyle Hehr, Shane Skiles, Huslry rider Allen Yother, Sannan, and Pro rider Ryan Lea.h, who completed the toP l0 in his comeback ride. On Sarurday, Honda-mounted Cerruri grabbed lhe lead, but it didnt take Hill long to work his way pasr Cerruti. Then he Proceeded to his second of two impressive showings. Cerruti held second for much of the race until both sannan and l'letzler got past the veteran Pro ridex Sannan and Merzler then sPent the remainder of the .ace battling for tecond, most ofthe time side by side. "That wa6 a good, clos€ race betw€en me and Sannan," said MeEler. "lt was really close th€ last lap. but the lappers 8ot me out of rhlthm, havin8 to try a bunch of different lines and all." Hill would a8ain lap every rider in the field - some rideE as many a! five tjmes - to post the win and take home the top money. Sannan and l'l€rler tiaded positions several times in the late sta8es, but Sannan took it for keeps on the final circuit and kept Metrler at bay and finished second. Metzler, thouSh, would figure higher in the overall results, placing second overall to Hill with his 2-3 Iinishes. Cerruti held on to finish fourth, a position he held throughout most of the rac€, followed by Lrncaster, Fouts, Kevrn Pevushkrn, Suzuki rider Zach Tait. Leach and Skiles, the loth-place finisher Overall, it was Hill (l-l), l4erzler (2-l) and Cerruti (4-4) who took the top positions on the rostrum, followed by top overall lntermediate rider [-ancaster (3-5) and Sannan, whose 9-2 p€rlormances eamed the l8-year' old from Albany fifth-overall pay.
