Marcello del Guidice (99), Nicky Hayden (29) and I)oug Carmichael (34) battled for the win in the F-III class, with del Guidice taking the win over lIayden. Enter the fifth lap, and Stroud had faded to eighth, with facks on the move - he snatched third away from Graves, who soon ran into trouble when some- one tried to stuff up undemeath him in the twisty back section, forcing him wide and almost off the track. "No more Mr. Nice Guy. I should have held my line," Graves said later. At that point, Kling was running con- sistent mid 1:35 lap times, and had opened a slight lead on Martin - who, in fum, had a bit of a lead over Jacks and Gardner. Graves, meanwhile, was struggling to get around the Southwest Motorsports duo of D'Aluisio and Petersen, who were stuck together, using each other's draft down the front and back straight to try and stay with big bikes. It wasn't working, they were getting smoked on the straights, and were courageously pitching their TZ250s into the tums as late and hard as oossible. ' In the closing laps, the front order of Kling, Martin, facks and Gardner would not Change - though Martin would begin to slow a bit, letting |acks draw near. D'Aluisio and Petersen were feeling the pressure from Graves and dropped their times down into the high 1:35s. Graves stalked and then picked off the trailing rider, Petersen, for sixth, with D'Aluisio holding down fifth. Dutchman riders Stroud and Zampach fought for most of the race, and finished eighth and ninth, resPec- tively, behind Petersen. Moto Liberty's Danny Walker rounded out the toP 10; Olive'r finished right behind him, fol- lowed by |oe Brett Williams and the ail- ing Shierts. Tensions were high before race two - the championship lead was on the line. "I couldn't get smooth for nothin'!" A frustrated Graves said. "I couldn't get tractiory the carburetion was off and the bike was like a light switch!" Martin and Jacks were both haPPY with their bikes, making few changes; Shierts was feeling horrible, and Kling was starting to worry. "The motor's got a three and a four hour endurance race on it," explained Kling. "lt's really whipped now." But Gold Hill crew chief John Hopperstad was confident that the bikewould safely finish race two, and sent Kling off to the grid. Again, since grid positions for the second leg are determined by the out- come of the first race, it was pole posi- tionfor Kling. The start of the second race was a dud, with a red flag ending it before a full lap was completed. Gold Hill's Christiin Gardner fell in one of the final turns, and lay immobile. The red flag flew, and Gardner was quickly whisked off to the nearest hospital; he was later disctrarged with no injuries' The iace was soon restarte4 and the field stormed off - without Oliver. "I put a new clutch in and it grabbed then atalled. I had to re-bumpstart the motor. I was going to pull in, but I fig- ured 'wha[ the heck' and went fot it," Oliver said later. The last of the pack was through tum one before Oliver got underway. Graves led into turn one, with Martin, Kling, facks, and a determined Shierts, who got his trademark holeshot from the outside of row five, jockeying for second. When the leaders hit the back straight of Indy's 15-tum, 2.Fmile course, Shierts couldn't keep up, and he faded back to ninth. Kling was in dan- ger of facing the same decline with the engine on the FZR1000 starting to lose Power. - "I was having a hard time keeping up down the straights in the second race," said Kling. "And it didn't get off the line well the second, or third, time. Then I couldn't get around Donald flacks), he was using my lines!" It took Kling seven laps to get into the lead - during which time Graves lit- erally slid out of the front spot, still hav- ing traction problems that the other Valvoline Suzuki riders weren't. Meanwhile, Oliver was in attack mode, and had scorched up to 13th overall by passing up to four people per turn. The 12-lap race ended before he could climb anyhigher. D'Aluisio was also on the move, and on the 10th go'aroun4 he ran a picture- perfect lap, passed |acks for third, plas- tered himself to the little TZ down the front straight, and set the unofficial track record al 7:35:,29. |acks must have been amazed, as on the next lap, he didn't see the white flag fly, and didn't make a run on D'Aluisio, who got third behind Kling and Martin, respectively. Petersen followed Jacks in fifth, with Graves not far behind. Stroud, Zampach, Shierts, and Walker rounded out the top 10 finishers. Formula II The Indianapolis Raceway Park round of Air Tech Formula II action belonged to the Southwest Motor- soorts team. Riders D'Aluisio and P'etersen delivered a one-two finish, respectively, to claim the top two podi- um spots - and the majority of the $10,000 purse. For his efforts, D'Aluisio earned the $3000 winner's share - which, when combined with the $1200 he eamed in F- USA made him the top money eamer on the weekend. Wily veteran Kurt Hall nabbed third overall out of the hands of Oliver on the final lap, and Walker followed Oliver home in fifth. Formula II action began with Saturday's four-lap heat race - and it was then that D'Aluisio asserted himself as the man to beat. After a somewhat slow start, D'Aluisio charged ahead to take the win from teammate Petersen. R hJ a E El E C\t O) O) d c\ a bJl Georgian Tripp Nobles (3) won the 750cc Superstock class at Indy, and also finished second behind Tom Wilson in the ll0(kc Supersport class. have had a run-away win if it weren't for Patterson. Patterson was perched immediately behind Nobles for most of the race. "We had the Suzuki running reallY well, but Tripp (Nobles) was riding well. We'll get him next time," said the friend- ly Patterson, who faded a bit towards tlre end to finish less than three seconds behind Nobles. Ray Yoder, Tray Batey, and Dean Hayes werethe top five. "How about that 1100 Superstock Race!" exclaimed a proud |im Nutt, a Hall'N'Still crew person. "Tom Wilson won! Onour (Honda) C8R900." Indeed, Wilson did win Open Superstock on a Hall'N'Still Honda CBR900, and in the process, he beat out Muzzy Kawasaki's Tripp Nobles, who seftled for second, almost four seconds back. Tray Batey was third, Mark McDaniel fourth, and Patterson fifth. tx The New Englander went on to again trail, pass and beat Petersen in the final, if only by a half second. "With two laps to 80, I went bY Robbie (Petersen)," explained D'Aluisio. "I rode as hard as I coul4 and if Robbie was going to come by, he was going to come by. I tried to run extra hard in the places where I knew !e was befter, and it worked." "It's the same old story of race craft," added Petersen. /'I was riding around on the last lap thinking I could pass Chris (D'Aluisio) in the last tum, but it didn't happen that way." For most of the rice, Oliver had a firm lock on third, with Hall, Danny Walker, and Bruce Baldus trailing, but Hall snuck up on Oliver on the last lap, taking the final podium position. "I was thinking the whole time," explained a pleased Hall "'I don't know if I can beat Richie (Oliver) - he's been racing these 250s a long time.' But Rich started slowing a bit - I think he was having tire problems - and I passed him into fum three." Walker, who had led the opening laps, couldn't quite catch the slowing Oliver, and settled for fifth. Bruce Baldus was charging hard throughout the race, and looked to be a contender for third until he shredded a rear tire in the closing laps, and settled for sixth. Chuck Sorensen was seventh, and William Himmelsbach, Marcello Del Guidice, and Donnie Greene rounded out the top 10. Formula III Honda RSl25.mounted Marcello Del Guidice won a tremendous battle over l2-year-old Nick Hayden, whose light weight gave him a serious acceleration advantage on the diminutive 125cc machines, and third place finisher Doug Carmichael. Nancy Delgado hounded fourth place finisher |im Struke for the entire iace, but couldn't figure out how to pass, and she had to settle for fifth. Superstock The first race of the day was the 60(hc Superstock class, and it ended up being a tough fight between California fast-guy Andy Milton and Valvoline Suzuki riders Kurt Hall and Stevie Patterson. Hall was the early leader, but Milton was quick to challenge for the lead, with Patterson hot on his heels. Hall soon ran into overheating problems on his GSXR600, and faded back to finish sixth. Patterson and Milton diced for the remainder of the race, but in the end, Milton and his MAC Honda/F&L Fuels Honda emerged supreme. Billy Eisenacher was third behind Patterson, with Bruce Baldus and Tray Batey rounding out the top five, Muzzy Kawasaki rider Tripp Nobles brought his ZXTR to Indy, and would F-USA RACE 1:.1.
