This time, though, Herring would have none of Everts, and roosted away with the win. Italian Alessandro Puzar, the 1990 World250cc MX Series Champion, ran near the front of the pack early on, but crashed hard and pulled off the track. This left the door wide open for Evertsen, Moore and Schmit to fill the top five spots. After the points were added up between motos, Schmit was declared the new champion, as he enjoyed a 82- point'lead over Moore. With only four motos and 80 possible points left to be scored, even a four-moto sweep would leave Moore empty-handed. With that news, an elated Schmit shed his riding gear and elected to spectate during the third moto. All eyes were on Everts and Herring at the start of moto three, but it was Evertsen who blasted into the point position. Everts crashed hard on the opening lap and retired, while Herring was mired in the middle of the pack. Puzar joined Everts on the sidelinei as he too crashed on the first lap. Evertsen went on to an uncontestd win, ahead of Englishman Jamie Dobb and American Bader Manneh, who crashed in the first two motos. Belgian Peter Iven and Swede Peter Johansson resisted a late-race charge by Herring to finish fourth and fifth, respectively. Herring's efforts were good enough, though, as he was awarded the overall wln. o:Ill Results MOTO l: l. Stefan Everts (Suz); 2. Rob Hering (Hon); 3. Mamicq B€no€ts (Yam); 4.Bobby Moor- (Yam); 5. I{orld Championship 5fi)cc MX Series: Round ll Nicoll closes in at Luxemboury KOHLENBERG, LUXEMBOURG, AUG. 9 ft nglishman Kurt Nicoll swept all t{ t}uee motos at the Luxembourg LJ Grand Prix to score a maximum 60 points and close to within ll points of defending series champion, Belgian Georges Jobe. Jobe leads the standings with 499 points, while Nicoll boass 488. Jobe posted 3-3-2 finishes for third overall. After winning the 1990 World Championship l25cc MX Series title in his first ye.r overseas, Schmit made the jump to the 250cc class in '92 and proved just as successful in his rookie season in that series. Things didn't look good for the Chesterfield Yamaha rider when he crashed hard in a whoop section during Saturday's free practice session and injured his thigh. Alter taking a trip to the hospital, though, Schmit returned to the uack and posted the fourth-fastest qualifying time. On race day, Schmit soldiered to l0th and fifth- place finishes in the first two 25- minute plus-two-lap motos, good enough to mathematically eliminate fellow countryman and teammate Bobby Moore's chances of winning the championship. A relieved, but sore Schmit elected tb sit out the final moto to rest his aching leg. The winner on the day was Brit Rob Herring, who posted consistent 2-l-6 moto finishes tp edge out Dutchman Edwin Evertsen's 5-3-l tally. Thfud went to l99l World l25cc MX Series Champion Stefan Everts of Belgium, who returned to action after suffering a ruptured spleen in June at the German GP. Evers ran away with the first moto and finished second in moto two, but crashed out of contention in the final race. Californian Moore, second in the series point standings, could only muster 4-4-7 finishes on the sandy course for fourth overall. Defending Champion Trampas Parker of Loui- siana was a no-show at Heinola, as a leg injury sustained at the previous round made it too painful to compete, Everts assumed the lead early in the first moto, and looked to be well on his way to an easy win, while Schmit struggled back in the pack. Herring had other ideas, though, and closed the gap on Everts after suffering a medi- ocre start. Though he repeatedly tried to pass, Everts slammed the door each time and took the checkered flag in first position. Trailing the lead duo across the line were Belgian Marnicq Bervoets and a distant Moore. Evertsen suffered a poor start, but the sand specialist blazed through the field and into fi(th by the moto's end. Schmit came home l0th. p a By Alex Ilodgkinson l6 ' .t,*',,,,,m" fu* n # ,w h ffi il ,w ffi ;* w ru H G ru 'ii4 WMry: h tu". \ Yl r&,H 3 tu- Wtu ,e ffi V, I
