"It was going pretty good until
it wasn't," Hampshire said. "The
first one, I had three crashes
and two of them I had some
help, and that kind of spent me.
I wasted a lot of energy in that
first moto just to try to get some
points. I probably gave away
two points there with two [laps]
to go. It was a bummer deal
today. These two [Tomac and
Cooper] carried the team today."
The always-fast French riders
rounded out the box in third
overall. Newly crowned MXGP
World Champion Febvre used
my all and had a few spills, but I
was definitely trying."
RJ Hampshire gave it his best
effort, finishing the day with 7-33
moto results. The Husqvarna
rider caught fire in the Open/
MX2 moto and ran down second
place in class to the crowd's
approval. Unfortunately, multiple
crashes hampered his efforts
and dropped him to fifth after
more than one soil sample. He
had a strong pace again in race
three, catching the tow through
the pack with Jett Lawrence.
Hampshire later hit the deck,
actually a TV stand, again in race
three and did not finish the moto.
3-2 in the MX2 class. Despite
a run-in with Sacha Coenen in
race one and a crash in race
two, Cooper's consistent fin
-
ishes paid off later in the day,
which helped carry Team USA to
the overall podium.
"I love coming to this race—
the energy we got all around
the track was special," Cooper
said. "There wasn't one section
where the crowd wasn't loud for
us, so that keeps you motivated
and charging forward. It was
definitely a tough day for me—
challenging to come through the
pack and trying to get by those
450s was tough. So, I gave it
