Flat track racing took center stage 50 years
ago. We had coverage of the Terre Haute
Half Mile and Santa Fe Short Track. Mike
Kidd won in Terre Haute in his first race
back after suering a broken leg, and Hank
Scott topped the Santa Fe Speedway
in Chicago... It wasn't all flat track, though. We also had
coverage of the 500cc National Motocross in New York in which
Pierre Karsmakers secured the win... In Pennsylvania, Lou
Gerencer topped the White Rose National Hillclimb... We got our
readers up to date on more helmet law issues.
Freddie Spencer made front-page news
for wrapping up the 500cc Road Race
World Championship in Sweden. A week
earlier, Spencer clinched the 250cc World
Championship... Je Ward took the 250cc
Supercross Championship at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena,
California. Johnny O'Mara won the race. Ward took the title
by one point over Broc Glover... Lowell Thomson edged
out Kenny Kizzar for top honors at Ponca City, the NMA
Grand National MX Championship in Oklahoma. A few
class winners included Colin Edwards, Damon Bradshaw
and Cli Palmer.
