P142 Gary Scott was featured on the cover of Cycle News 50 years ago. We had coverage of the Midland 125cc Motocross Nationals, where Marty Smith dominated... Evel Knievel's attempt to jump 13 buses in London's Wembley Stadium didn't go so well. Nearly 90,000 spectators witnessed Knievel crash spectacularly when he came up seven feet short, breaking numerous bones. Afterward, he announced it would be his last jump... We visited the Jones' (Don, Gary and DeWayne) house and checked up on their 250cc prototype Islo motocrosser they were building. We thought it would be cool to jump a Harley- Davidson 883 Sportster. We ran a photo of us doing that from Ascot Park on the cover 40 years ago... Factory racers conquered Mammoth Mountain, winning all three Pro classes, with Ron Lechien (Honda), Rick Johnson (Yamaha), and Johnny O'Mara (Honda)... Steve Morehead won the Lima Half- Mile... We had coverage of the 500cc U.S. GP Motocross from Carlsbad. David Bailey won both motos, and Dave Thorpe was the top European rider... Fritz Kadlec won the Trask Two-Day ISDE Qualifier.
