Gary Scott was featured on the cover of
Cycle News 50 years ago. We had coverage
of the Midland 125cc Motocross Nationals,
where Marty Smith dominated... Evel
Knievel's attempt to jump 13 buses in
London's Wembley Stadium didn't go
so well. Nearly 90,000 spectators witnessed Knievel
crash spectacularly when he came up seven feet short, breaking
numerous bones. Afterward, he announced it would be his last
jump... We visited the Jones' (Don, Gary and DeWayne) house
and checked up on their 250cc prototype Islo motocrosser they
were building.
We thought it would be cool to jump a Harley-
Davidson 883 Sportster. We ran a photo of us
doing that from Ascot Park on the cover 40
years ago... Factory racers conquered Mammoth
Mountain, winning all three Pro classes, with
Ron Lechien (Honda), Rick Johnson (Yamaha), and Johnny
O'Mara (Honda)... Steve Morehead won the Lima Half-
Mile... We had coverage of the 500cc U.S. GP Motocross
from Carlsbad. David Bailey won both motos, and Dave
Thorpe was the top European rider... Fritz Kadlec won the
Trask Two-Day ISDE Qualifier.
