Bewley, Zmarzlik Share Manchester Wins
G
reat Britain icon Dan Bewley
expressed his determina-
tion to repay a passionate and
devoted home crowd by surg-
ing to victory at the ATPI FIM
Speedway GP of Great Britain
in Manchester on Friday, June
13, the fourth round of the FIM
Speedway GP Championship.
Unfortunately for Bewley, he was
unable to repeat that perfor
-
mance the next evening, June
14, for round five. Instead, it was
championship leader Bartosz
Zmarzlik who won.
On Friday night, Bewley sent
the 5500 fans—the largest crowd
in the venue's nine-year history—
into a frenzy when he made a
sensational start in the final,
outpacing Poland's five-time
Speedway GP World Champion
Zmarzlik in second, his Belle Vue
teammate Brady Kurtz of Austra
-
lia in third, and Sweden's Fredrik
Lindgren in fourth.
Chants of "Bewley, Bewley"
echoed across the National
Speedway Stadium, and the
26-year-old acknowledged he
will never forget his fifth Speed
-
way GP victory.
"The whole day has been pretty
cool, to be honest," Bewly said.
"I didn't really want to change
too much. I just used my British
bikes, nothing was really differ
-
ent for me than when I come to a
normal league meeting. I felt the
same, but that feeling from the
crowd was pretty different. I wish
we had that every week."
Zmarzlik responded the next
night with his 29th career GP
win, topping Kurtz, Lindgren and
Jack Holder in the final.
Zmarzlik leads the champi
-
onship over Kurtz, 93-82. Lind-
gren is third with 70 points and
Holder is fourth on 68. Bewley is
seven points back in fifth.
