Moto3
Angel Piqueras (Frinsa – MT
Helmets – MSI) is the new
Moto3 Championship leader
after a thrilling victory in Doha,
narrowly defeating Taiyo Furu
-
sato (Honda Team Asia) by just
nine-thousandths of
a second
in a drag race to the line. Ryusei
Yamanaka (Frinsa – MT Hel-
mets – MSI) secured third for
his
second career podium, fol-
lowing a maiden pole.
Yamanaka
made a strong
start and led early as a lead
group quickly formed. Penalties
for Adrian Fernandez (Leop
-
ard Racing Honda) and rookie
Alvaro
Carpe (Red Bull KTM Ajo)
dropped them out of contention,
Behind, Oncu fended off
Gonzalez for second. Daniel Hol-
gado (CFMoto Inde Aspar Team)
impressed
in fourth, just 2.7 sec-
onds off the podium, while Diogo
Moreira
(Italtrans Racing Team)
edged out Barry Baltus (Fantic
Racing Lino Sonego) for fifth.
Jake Dixon's crash at turn 13
while chasing Gonzalez proved
costly, handing the champion-
ship lead to Canet. Rounding out
the top
10 was Celestino Vietti
(Team HDR Heidrun), Marcos
Ramirez (American Racing
Team), Arenas and Filip Salac
(Elf Marc VDS Racing Team).
In the points, Canet now leads
on 71 to Gonzalez's 61 with
Dixon dropping to third on 59.
Canet's race began in disaster
as a massive wheelie off the
start dropped him from third to
14th. Meanwhile, rookie Daniel
Holgado made an electric start,
climbing to second by lap two,
before Oncu and Albert Arenas
(Italjet Gresini Moto2) joined the
front group.
Canet methodically worked
his way through the field, climb
-
ing into the top five by lap seven.
With the leading pack closely
bunched, a small mistake from
Oncu with five laps to go opened
the door for Canet to hit the
front. Once there, he gradually
built a gap and crossed the line
1.1 seconds clear for an em
-
phatic win.
