Maute motors to Edwards AFB Motocross win By Greg Robertson EDWARDS AFB, CA, SEPT. 27 KTM of Mojave-sponsored Mike Maute swept both motos to earn the 250cc Novice class victory at California Racing Club motocross held at Edwards Air Force Base. Mike Blair got the program underway, leading Maute and Duke Loppnow early in the first race. Within a couple of laps, Maute had the long sandy circuit dialed in and shot past Blair for the lead. Maute almost made it look easy as he took the win going away with Blair second over Loppnow. Exiting the first turn within roost-range was the closest anyone got to Maute in moto two. Blair ran second the entire race with Loppnow and John Keefer dicing for third. Up at the front of the pack, Maute was riding a flawless race and won by a comfortable margin. Keefer got past Loppnow, but ran out of time to make an attempt on second place. Young 14-year-old Corey Garcia grabbed both 250cc Beginner class holeshots but it was Mark Goebel who had the endurance to work up from midpack starts and win both races. Garcia and Ray Harp argued over the runner- up position both times out with Harp's 3- 2 finishes edging out Garcia for the second place trophy. Mike Jervey easily won the first Over The Hill Gang Novice moto after getting around early leader Steve Vincze on the second lap. Two laps later, Jim McConnell pushed Vincze back to third, where he stayed until the checkered flag. Vincze grabbed the second moto holeshot and never looked back. McConnell controlled second place until halfway into the moto, when Jervey got around him after working up from a midpack start. Jervey reeled in Vincze with a lap to go, but came up 20 feet short at the finish. Jeff Mattox followed Jervey up through the pack to take third over Warren Brown, who passed McConnell on the last lap. Jervey ended up the overall winner over Vincze. Greenway on the gas at Perris Motocross By Tony Alessi ־ PERRIS, CA, OCT. 3 John Greenway posted a set of moto victories en route to the overall Vet Intermediate class victory during GFI Super Saturday MX, held at Perris Raceway. The Perris facility was completely revamped for the upcoming Fall Series and featured a new course layout which provided for plenty of passing throughout the day. The first lap of the first moto was led by David Lynch, who was riding a borrowed bike. Greenway was flying and was soon breathing down the back of Lynch, while Rick Richards, Marc Crosby and Jim Hansen filled the remaining positions at the front of the pack. The racing turned from good to great as Greenway made the first move and passed Lynch through one of the many technical sections of the course. Lynch appeared shaken by the move and seemed to have lost some steam. Richards was the next to take a jab at Lynch, and successfully railed a fast outside line. Richards then pulled even with Lynch down a choppy straightaway and forced Lynch from the good line in the following hairpin to take over second. Richards immediately set after Greenway, and just when it seemed as if Richards was within striking distance, he fell. Lynch picked up second but was a far cry from Greenway,, who was now enjoying a tremendous lead. At the finish it was Greenway with the win with Crosby pushing ahead of Lynch for second during the closing moments of the race. Richards successfully charged back for fourth in front of Jim Hanson. The second moto saw a repeat holeshot for Lynch with Hanson, Crosby and Greenway in hot pursuit. Lynch led for three laps before giving in to the intense pressure from Greenway. Richards and Hanson were engaged in an all-out battle for third, and collided in mid-air over a double jump. Hanson saved it, but Richards did not. This moved Hanson into a solid third. During the closing laps, Crosby came alive and passed Hanson at the finish. Richards made a noteworthy charge and nipped Hanson at the finish for fourth. Greenway stole the show with a pair of flawless motos and topped the entire field on the day. Zac Hybbert was on the attack all day and worked the competition into the ground en route to a set of moto wins in the 125cc Beginner class. Dave Eychaner rode a pair of consistent motos for runner-up honors, while Tommy Roberts finished third on the day. 250 INT: 1. Ulf Johansson (Yam); 2. Tony Spear (Yam); 3. Larry Linkogle (Hon); 4. Renfrow rails at Seattle RR By Jaqui Madelin SEATTLE, WA, SEPT. 20 Doug Renfrow won the Open Production class on a wet day of racing at Seattle Internatonal Raceway. Rains fell intermit tently throughout the day, making tire selection a gamble. Renfrow had topped the first three races of the season in the Open Production class, and was the favorite for the win, but the rain had some people wondering. By turn eight of the first lap, Keith Pinkstaff was just ahead of Renfrow's Suzuki, but Renfrow surged underneath in a chicane to take over first place. Shawn Robert! moved up into third, and the top positions remained the same for several laps while the riders freight-trained around the damp course. Mike Sullivan closed on third-place Robert¡, and began showing him his front wheel in several turns. Sullivan drafted Robert! on the front straight, then dove around on the inside to take over the third spot. The positions remained the same to the finish, with Renfrow increasing his advantage and nabbing the win. The 450cc Superbike class fielded 47 entries, and Dave Lannigan led them all on the first lap. Bill Boldman and Andrew Moore were both in hot pursuit. Karl Schenk passed Moore for third and began to close on Boldman, who was in turn pressuring the leading Lannigan. Boldman squeezed past Lannigan to take over first place, and a little later Schenk also passed Lannigan for second place. The top three riders stayed close as they came up on lapped traffic, and Schenk got a good drive out of a chicane and passed Boldman for first place. Schenk held onto the lead until the finish, and Boldman took the runner-up spot. Tom Thompson took the early lead aboard a borrowed FZR600 in the 600cc Production class, but Bruce Lind was close behind. Thompson held off the more-experienced Lind for two laps, but Lind dove past in turn three to take over the lead. Simon Bell then got around Thompson for second, and held off Thompson's bids to re-secure the position. Bell began to hound the leading Lind, who fought off his advances despite the slippery conditions. Lind rode to the win, while Thompson slid back to fifth place at the finish. Results 450 PROD: 1.
