In 1988, Bubba Shobert (1) and Doug
Polen battled for the AMA Superbike
Championship, and a major turning point
occurred at Mid-Ohio. Shobert and Polen
were fighting for the lead until Polen
crashed with the checkered flag nearly
in sight, handing the Championship top
spot to Shobert with one round left to
go. Polen won the final, but Shobert
took the title by four points.
