High school motocross was featured on the cover of Cycle News 50 years ago. Saddleback Park hosted the Yamaha California State High School MX Championships, and 325 racers participated. One of the top performers was Tommy Croft of Kearney High in San Diego... We wrote about one of the hottest trends—Bicycle Motocross, aka BMX... We had full coverage of the Jackrabbits Hare & Hound at Red Mountain, California. Husqvarna's Dan Ashcraft outdueled Yamaha-mounted Ted Hunnicutt for the win... We had ARRA road racing coverage from Willow Springs. Our headline: "Unknow Texan smokes everybody at Willow Springs Superbike finale." That Texas was 20-year-old Kevin Schwantz.
