Big Bike Weekend Concludes
Mammoth Motocross
T
he 2024 running of the Mammoth
Motocross ran its course over the
June 28-30 weekend, with the big bikes
hitting the mountainside course. A
supercross-style format meant riders
qualified for their main events through
a heat race and a last-chance qualifier
(if required). The one-moto main events
decided who would get to take home the
coveted bear trophies.
The Open Pro Sport race saw an all-
out dogfight between two supercross
racers turned off-roaders, as Justin
Hoeft and Cole Martinez duked it out for
the win. Martinez, who swept the 30 Pro
division the previous week, led the first
seven laps with Hoeft hot on his heels.
The Yamaha rider, Hoeft, set the fast
-
est lap of the race with three to go and
moved around Martinez at the bottom
of Mammoth's infamous hill to take over
the top spot. Hoeft claimed the win by
just over one second in what was one of
the most exciting races of the weekend.
Hoeft again went on to win the Two-
Stroke Open class, barely beating Derek
Drake to the line by less than a second.
Drake took second on a custom-built
Suzuki RM250, while Dustyn Davis, Ty
Davis' son, finished third.
Robbie Wageman took top honors in
the 450cc Pro main event as he led every lap of
the 10-lap race. The Yamaha rider, who is on a
supercross-only deal, beat out Martinez, who rode
a solid second ahead of SLR Honda teammate
Parker Ross. Ross started outside the top five but
put in a hard-fought effort for the final spot on the
box.
Ross then rebounded for the win in the 250 Pro
class as he convincingly led every lap of the moto,
adding yet another bear to his collection for the
week. CJ Benard and Wyatt Mattson traded spots
during the race, with Benard taking second and
Mattson third.
Martinez was also the King of the Vets as he
took another win in the 25+ Open division. The
Honda rider won by a double-digit margin over
two other former pros, Ryan Villopoto and Chris
Gosselaar.
