T
his was a weekend the World Cham-
pion won't forget in a hurry. Frances-
co Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team),
bedazzled his adoring home fans with two
wins that reminded everyone just who is
wearing the number-one plate in MotoGP.
After being beaten to the pole by archri-
val and title leader Jorge Martin (Prima
Pramac Ducati), Bagnaia blasted off the line
from second to take the holeshot and lead
into San Donato. Teammate Enea Bastianini
also launched well, taking the inside line to
move into second, pushing Martin to third.
Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing)
rocketed up from 13th to challenge for the
top five, while Maverick Vinales (Aprilia Rac
-
ing) lost positions to Binder and Marquez.
The first major move came from Marc
Marquez (Gresini Ducati), who attacked
Binder on the main straight, squeezing
through on the right and holding the posi-
tion into San Donato. Marquez then set
his sights on the top three where Bagnaia
maintained his lead as Martin scythed past
Bastianini.
However, Bastianini attempted a move
at San Donato, went slightly wide, and
Martin went for the undercut, with contact
ensuing and Bastianini crashing out. This
incident, along with a collision between
Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha
MotoGP) and Miguel Oliveira (Trackhouse
Racing) later in the race that saw both rid
-
ers crashing out, were both deemed racing
incidents by the FIM MotoGP Stewards,
much to the chagrin of Bastianini and
Quartararo.
