WIND IN THE P50 Oscar Garcia and Ricardo Velez took the win. They finished the race in approximately 12 and a half hours. Ethan Wheeler, Casey Thomas, Ryan Stephens, Dustin Ashe- Everest and Jason Mount, riding a KTM 500 EXC-F won Pro Moto 30 in just under 15 hours. "We had a good day overall," Thomas said right after the fin - ish. "We had some mechanical issues and lost our front brakes after the first 150 miles. But everybody managed to make it through their sections, and we'll see how it plays out. My section was very clean. I did the best I could without the front brakes." Francisco Septien, Shane Esposito, Rene Magana and Jim O'Neal had room to spare in win - ning the Pro Moto 40 class on a Kawasaki KX450X. Daniel Mastrude, of Boise, Idaho, rode a KTM 500 EXC-F to victory in the Pro Moto Ironman division. He soloed the race in 13:41:53, which was just a few minutes better than class runner- up Patricio Cabrera of Chile, riding a Husqvarna FE450. And Brian Roberts of Hemet, Califor - nia, was right there, too. He took the checkers just a few minutes back in third. CN OVERALL 1. Arturo Salas, Carter Klein, Ciaran Naran (Hon) 10:36:03 Ruml Runs Away L ike Jett Lawrence, winning has become a habit for Max "Mad Max" Ruml. Now a multi-time U.S. and California Speedway Champion, it doesn't appear that there are too many candidates ready to unseat him. Saturday was the opening night of the Southern California Speedway season at the Indus - try Hills Expo Center. And it was no different, as Max roared to the maximum scores, taking three point victories over "Fast Eddie" Castro, Russell Green, Austin "On The Throttle" Novratil and the ageless Bobby Schwartz in the process. Much to the chagrin of his opponents, Ruml makes it look easy. His main opponent this evening was Broc Nicol, who also came to the final with all three- point scores from his heats. Both of them transferred to the semi- mains and both came away with wins, with Ruml defeating Castro, Wells and Green, while Nicol took the win over Justin Almon, Wilbur Hancock (son of four-time World Champion Greg Hancock) and Mark Fillebrown. In the Division 2 Heats, Eloy Medellin took a second-place fin - ish in his first heat, but then "ran the table" in all the rest of his races, taking a spectacular run- away win in the main, beating Rudy Laurer, and Rayson Nor- mandin to the checkered flag. At the end of the night, it all came down to the Scratch Main and Ruml faced off against Broc Nicol, Wilbur Hancock and Rus- sell Green, all of them capable of winning on the right evening. Getting a good start is critical, with just four laps, and when the gates flew up, both Broc and Ruml leapt off of the line. Broc chose the high line, but it was not enough to catch Ruml. On the last lap, as Broc tried to swing around the outside, Green swooped in to take second. Richard T. Haight Max Ruml leads Broc Nicol, Russell Green and Wilbur Hancock. PHOTOS – RICHARD T.
