We tested the Harley-Davidson Sportster XL1000, which was
pictured on the cover 50 years ago... We also tested the Norton 850
Interstate... One of our featured race reports was the Chaparrals
Coyote 150 Enduro staged in Twentynine Palms, California. Gas
rationing was in full steam then, and we were impressed that 400 riders
still managed to make the trek to the race on their 10-gallon gas limit...
Gene Romero, riding a Yamaha TZ700, broke the one-hour speed
record at Daytona when he completed 64-plus laps in 60 minutes.

LOOKING BACK I
Freddie Spencer and Kenny Roberts were pictured on the cover of
our 1984 Daytona preview issue. We were hyping up another Spencer/
Roberts showdown for the 200... We covered the opening round of
the AMA Grand National Championship MX Series from Gatorback.
All three classes ran, with Jeƒ Ward winning the 125cc class, Bob
Hannah the 250s and David Bailey the 500s.
