Peters Wins Guthrie Arenacross
T
he AMA Arenacross Series
took to Guthrie, Oklahoma, on
January 20, for round six of the
championship and the tour's first
stop in Guthrie. The Oklahoma
course is one of the biggest
circuits of the year, and lap times
in the 50-second range rivaled a
regular supercross layout. After
two mains, Kyle Peters emerged
with the overall win and contin
-
ues to hold the championship
points lead with room to spare.
In typical Arenacross fashion,
the top two riders swapped wins
on the night, with Ryan Breece
again being Peters' biggest threat.
Breece got the better start and
led every lap of the first main
event en route to the win. His lead
grew to over five seconds clear of
Peters at the checkers. Peters got
close during the mid-section of
the race but couldn't seal the deal
on a pass for the win.
Jared Lesher finished third
aboard his 250cc two-stroke.
All three of the first-race po
-
dium finishers started in the back
row in the second main event.
Getting out of the gate first
was crucial, and Peters showed
his championship prowess as
he navigated through the field
quickly on the opening laps. By
lap four, the Honda rider was in
the lead, while Breece struggled
to move into a podium position.
"I was stoked to get through
the pack so quick," Peters said.
Once out front, the defending
champion set sail and took the
win by over four seconds. Breece
clawed his way to second in the
latter stages of the race, with Izaih
Clark rounding out the podium.
Peter leads the series by 21
points over Breece.
"This is what we're here to do,
and I don't like to lose," Peters said.
"We have a good points cushion,
and we'll keep moving forward."
"That one stings a little bit,"
Breece said. "We were trying to
get him [Peters] there towards
the end but just got beat. That's
how it is. This is a good track
to make passes. I just need to
make them sooner and faster to
get back in the action and get
back on him quick."
