BY RYAN NITZEN PHOTOGRAPHY BY BROWN DOG WILSON / RED BULL CONTENT POOL I t only took two rounds for fans and riders to see the first mud race of the 2024 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series. Seasonal rains soaked the San Francisco area for the cham - pionship's second round and forced an abbreviated schedule for the day's qualifying and main event racing. Despite the trying conditions, KTM's Chase Sexton and Yamaha's Jordon Smith sailed through San Francisco with wins and the points lead in the 450SX and 250SX West divisions. Sexton is ready to show the field why he's carrying the number-one plate on his bike. The defending series cham - pion struggled at round one but turned things around with a big win in San Francisco. He rocket - ed off to a near-perfect holeshot and proceeded to control the race from the front. Sexton set the fastest time of the night and looked to be one of the few riders actually racing the track, while others struggled with simply surviving on the rutted course. He led every lap of the shortened main event and kept a hungry Eli Tomac at bay in the final stages of the race. Sexton put his stamp on the win by lapping round-one winner Jett Lawrence en route to victory. He now takes control of the cham - pionship lead and sports the red plate heading into round three. ROUND 2 / JANUARY 13, 2024 ORACLE PARK / SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA SUPERCROSS I MONSTER ENERGY AMA SUPERCROSS SERIES / SUPERMOTOCROSS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP P46 It didn't take long for chaos to ensue at the start of the 450SX main event.
