Legendary rivals Roger DeCoster and Adolf Weil from the
Saddleback Trans AMA MX were pictured on the cover of Cycle News
50 years ago. Despite pressure from DeCoster, Weil won the race and
the championship. Rich Thorwaldson was the top American finisher
on the day and Gary Jones and Pierre Karsmakers were scolded by
the AMA for fighting in the pits... We interviewed AMA MX Referee
John Lancione, better known as Light Brown... The U.S. was in the
middle of the energy crisis, and motorcyclists were worried about
legislation rumors that would ban all "non-essential" use of gasoline—
like motorcycle racing. The rumors proved to be false.

Our MV Agusta 850 test bike was featured on the cover 40 years ago...
We had full coverage of the 12th annual Florida Winter National Mini
Olympics from Gainesville, Florida. The racing included short track, TT
scrambles, hare scrambles and motocross. The top racer was North
Carolina's Damon Bradshaw, who took home the coveted Trim Bronze
Boot Award. Other notable winners included Hank Moree, Ronnie
Tichenor, Bobby Moore and Eddie Warren... We covered the B-2-V
road run.
