Roger De Coster was featured on the Cycle News cover 50 years ago
for our coverage of the Carlsbad USGP. Willie Bauer won, De Coster
was fifth and Brad Lackey was the top American in eighth... We rode
the new 250cc Maico Radial motocrosser and found it to be "stronger
than dirt." The forks were reportedly so good that Ake Jonsson put
them on his prototype Yamaha... Sons of the legendary John Penton,
Tom and Jack, along with Billy Uhl won the Manufacturer's Team award
at the Barstow ISDT Qualifier... Jim Rice led the Harley team to victory
in the Columbus, Ohio, Half-Mile.

LOOKING BACK I
We interviewed Je Ward and put him on the cover 40 years ago. The
Team Kawasaki racer said that he used to be happy with third place in
a championship, but now he wants to win... Swede Hakan Carlqvist
took the win in the 500cc USGP with 1-2 finishes; Broc Glover was top
American in second with 2-1 finishes... It was an all-Harley-Davidson
podium at the Knoxville Half-Mile with Jay Springsteen in first in front
of Randy Goss and Dan Ingram. Another Harley rider, Tammy Kirk,
made history by becoming the first woman ever to make an AMA Grand
National main event...
