Our test bike of the week was a Naguchi-kitted Yamaha AT3 MX 125.
Naguchi was Yamaha's answer to the higher-tech bikes from Europe
at the time, such as the Penton and Husqvarna 125cc motocross
bikes. The Naguchi engine kit sold for $285... John Ulrich visited
Washington DC and the folks in the Department of Transportation
and discussed all things motorcycles... ISDT rider Al Eames was the
subject of our feature story on the upcoming ISDT in the U.S... Kenny
Roberts topped the Ascot Half-Mile after battling Dave Aldana.

LOOKING BACK I
Jay Springsteen was pictured on the cover 40 years ago after winning
the Ascot Half-Mile National. It was his 34th career win. Honda
debuted its RS750 dirt-tracker at the race. Terry Poovey rode the bike
but did not qualify for the main event... We covered the AMA ISDE
Qualifier in Spur, Texas. Husqvarna's Larry Roeseler was the overall
winner... Mark Barnett took a hard-fought win over Johnny O'Mara
and Je Ward at the Kansas City Supercross... We reported the
passing of popular Southern California local track announcer and
Cycle News contributor Steve Crosby.
