MARCH 9-11, 2023
DAYTONA INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY / DAYTONA BEACH, FLORIDA
ROAD RACE I 81ST DAYTONA 200
P94
despite a seem-
ingly endless
and
viscous
tank slapper on
the high banks.
Once he got that
under control, he
was keeping the
pressure on Kyle
Wyman, who had
earlier in the day
taken victory in
the three-lap King
Of The Baggers
Challenge, when
the H-D Screa
-
min' Eagle Road Glide expired
with
five laps to go. From there
it was a battle to the finish
with Rispoli and his teammate
Hayden Gillim joined by the
second factory Harley of Travis
Wyman, who's bike also expired
on the banking late in the race.
Worries that Travis' Harley
had oiled the track meant the
red flag was called and Rispoli
was given the win. Defending
Mission King Of The Baggers
runner-up Hayes
said. "I did the pit
stop and came
back out and I
was kind of in the
same position. I
might have lost a
second to them,
but I was rela
-
tively in the same
position.
I fought,
and fought, and
fought. I finally
got what the gap
was behind me. I
kind of settled in
and then I saw Richie (Escalan
-
te) on the ground and saw P2. I
said,
'Well, I'm just going to kind
of bring her home clean right
now.' Actually, it kind of worked
in my favor because I took it
pretty easy on the tire at that
point, which ended up giving me
some tire at the end."
King Of The Baggers
The opening round of the Mis-
sion Foods King Of The Baggers
saw James
Rispoli (Vance &
Hines Harley-Davidson) take the
first Baggers win of his career in
race one after one of the great-
est saves ever seen in the class.
Rispoli
was running second
and giving chase to early leader
Kyle Wyman when he made the
save of his life and somehow
stayed onboard his Road Glide,
At the restart, it was game on but
Cameron Petersen (45) wasn't even
sure he was on the lead lap.
It was another podium for Josh
Hayes (left) and Petersen (right) but
no one was smiling more than Herrin.
