Yamaha swept the Daytona 200 in 1983, 50 years ago. In front of 61,000 fans, Finland's Jarno Saarinen, riding a water-cooled Yamaha 350 and who was pictured on the cover, took the win over fellow Yamaha riders Kel Carruthers and Jim Evans. Dick Mann and Don Emde rounded out the top five... Mike Kidd won both short track races at Daytona... We tested the Yamaha SC500 scrambler, which was really a motocrosser on steroids... We covered the Invaders M.C. desert race in Red Mountain, California, where Mitch Mayes came away with the overall win. YEARS AGO MARCH , P154 LOOKING BACK I Kenny Roberts was pictured on the cover of Cycle News 40 years ago for winning the Daytona 200. Freddie Spencer won the Daytona Superbike 100 in the first superbike race in the 750cc era... Bob Hannah led from start to finish on the works Honda at the Daytona Supercross. Honda teammates Johnny O'Mara and David Bailey went 2-3... We tested the 1983 Maico 490 Spider... We had coverage of the Viewfinders Grand Prix at Riverside International Raceway. Bruce Ogilvie was the big winner.
