We ran a photo of movie star Steve McQueen on the cover of Cycle
News 50 years ago. McQueen helped us test a couple of bikes in our
"Motocross Test Spectacular" issue, which included the 1973 Honda
CR250M Elsinore and CZ 250 5-speed... Many star motocrossers from
Europe descended on Florida to compete in the warmth and prepare
for the upcoming racing season. Dutchman Pierre Karsmakers, now
competing with an American license, topped the Yanks and everyone
else on a Yamaha in Jacksonville... We chatted with Brad Lackey's
mechanic Steve Johnson.

LOOKING BACKI
The Houston Short Track and TT doubleheader was the big story this
week 40 years ago. Steve Eklund, Sunday's TT winner, was pictured on
the cover. Terry Poovey won Saturday's short track... We had coverage
of the Paris to Dakar Rally. The winner was Hubert Auriol on a BMW
980... Bruce Ogilvie and Chuck Miller shared a Honda XR500R and
rode it to victory at the Parker 400... Bob Hannah, Donnie Cantaloupi
and Je€ Ward were the big winners in the CMC Golden State MX
Series at Reef Ridge MX.
