track we had tonight, it was all about clicking off your laps and that's what I did." Cameron McAdoo took home the final podium of the night in third. Off the start, McAdoo looked like he'd battle with Jett for the lead, but the tough track conditions made it hard to pass or make up time. The lone Pro Circuit Kawasaki rider held it down in second for much of the race before lappers and a late- race mistake allowed Hampshire early in the night and carried that momentum into the main event. He stalked Cameron Mcadoo for the early stages but capitalized on mistakes and lapped riders as the race wore on. A late-race pass bumped RJ up one spot and put him solidly in the title fight. "I've never been in a situation where I could see the leader at round one," Hampshire said. "I wanted to get out of here healthy and be on the box, so with the Barcia ended up in 11th place, Marvin Musquin in 12th and Christian Craig in 13th. Craig, who was making his debut on the Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Team, crashed hard in practice and struggled the rest of the night. 250SX The 250SX West class also kicked off with its fair share of fireworks. The day's fastest qualifier, Austin Forkner, suf- fered a huge get-off down the start straight after being ejected from the bike. With the chaos behind him, Lawrence grabbed the holeshot and the early lead. Lawrence put on a clinic, lead- ing every lap virtually mistake free. Despite some difficulties in practice and in the heat race, Lawrence's fastest lap rivaled the leaders in the 450 division, and he was the only 250 rider to crack the sub-one-minute mark during the main. It's been a few years since Lawrence raced A1 and he was visibly excited to claim the win at the opening round. "After practice, it was just trying to survive and not die," Lawrence said. "I ended up just doing what I needed to do and made it the safest way possible for me to go out there and do my laps." RJ Hampshire put himself in the mix, with a second-place finish to start the season.
