We featured our project Hodaka on the cover of Cycle News 50 years
ago. We showed you how you could turn your 140cc Hodaka Wombat
trail bike into a formidable desert racer... We covered the Mini World
Motocross Championship at Saddleback Park. The top rider of the
day was Todd Peterson. Keeping with the minibike theme, we tested
Honda's new XR75 motocrosser, which sold for $399... For the
streetbike enthusiast, we tested the Suzuki GT 550, which we said was
"a very civilized machine."

LOOKING BACK I
Our 1983 Husqvarna 250 XC test bike was pictured in action on the
cover 40 years ago. We also brought along Husky's 500 XC... The CMC
Golden State MX Series got under way at Saddleback Park. Danny
Chandler and Broc Glover battled back and forth in the 500cc class,
with the overall win going to Chandler. Mark Barnett and Bob Hannah
won the 125cc and 250cc classes, respectively... In Florida, David
Bailey, Karl Jordan and John Finkeldey were the big winners in the
Winter-AMA MX Series opener at St. Peterburg.
