Mick Doohan's "Big Bang" Honda NSR500 was pictured on the cover of
Cycle News 30 years ago. Alan Cathcart told our readers what it was like
to ride it... We covered the Florida Winter National Olympics, aka Mini O's,
where Kevin Windham came away with the 125cc 12-15 and 125cc B-class
Championships. Brian Deegan, Ricky Carmichael, Robbie Reynard
and James Stewart (in the PeeWee class) were some of the other big
winners... Jeff Stanton was crowned
the inaugural World Supercross
Champion following the Geveva
Supercross.
Ricky Carmichael was our first two-time Cycle News Rider of the
Year Award winner and was on the cover (twice) in our final issue of
2002... We featured several interviews, including Carmichael, AMA
Superbike Champ Nicky Hayden, World Superbike Champ Colin
Edwards, MotoGP Champ Valentino Rossi and East SX Champ
Chad Reed... Dominic Izzi was the top points scorer at the Mini O's.
