ROUND 10-11/AUGUST 3-4, 2013 MILLER MOTORSPORTS PARK/TOOELE, UTAH AMA SUPERBIKE P90 AMA NATIONAL GUARD SUPERBIKE SERIES to come back and give these boys a race tomorrow." Sunday Hayes was a man on a mission, way out in front and then the crash. A lowside under braking for a medium-speed lefthander. Getting his bike out of the gravel trap took forever, but amazingly it ran okay after the crash in spite of hitting the deck pretty hard. Credit to Hayes, if the bike had any life at all, he was going to try to get back in the race and try to score points, no matter how hopeless it looked. Perhaps the biggest surprise for Hayes was the fact that his bike was so raceable after such a big crash. "I was very, very surprised," Hayes said upon examining his crashed Yamaha R1. "The bike is, uh… I don't want to use the word 'tank,' but in two years, three times I've crashed the motorcycle, picked it up and finished a race. Not just practice- My Own Race: 72 LARRY PEGRAM 6TH/20TH Larry Pegram continues to chase the form he showed in his promising Daytona debut where he scored a pair of podium finishes with a factory-spec Yamaha. He scored sixth in Saturday's race, edging out David Anthony at the flag, but then his bike broke on Sunday leaving him almost too disappointed to talk about it. "We're lost right now a little bit on everything," Pegram shrugged. "Everything started to come together a little bit in qualifying and then in the race yesterday [Saturday] I made some mistakes and thought that the thing was slowing down and then today it broke, so it was slowing down yesterday, but you know, whatever. I don't know why the motor broke. Hopefully they'll [Yamaha] know what's up with it, so we'll see." 99 GEOFF MAY 9TH/5TH Geoff May had the EBR humming on Sunday with a solid fifth-place finish, matching his season best. It was a marked improvement from Saturday's race where he came out on the short end of the stick in a great dice with Larry Pegram, David Anthony and Chris Fillmore. "The pace between the two races wasn't that much different," said the former Superbike Rookie of the Year. "Yesterday I was faster in the end, but slower in the beginning and today [Sunday] I was much faster in the beginning and just slightly slower at the end. Yesterday I really got held up bad at the beginning. I didn't get that great of a start and got kind of pinched off in one. I got shuffled back and it made for such a long race. The way I ride the bike I have to do it all with corner speed and when there's someone in front of me I can't do it. So for Sunday I said the start is going to be my race. If I can get clean air, I can clear off and I might be able to get Danny [Eslick] towards the end of the race or anyone who's having problems among those front runners. I guess all that envisioning of a good start paid off. I got clean air and dropped the hammer, got in the 52s and really got a brought it back in and fixed it-but finished a race. The guys do an amazing job of giving me a bike that's ready for anything. It was a pretty big crash. It went across the pavement, went over a curb, pavement again and then flipped off to the gravel. So [it's a] pretty strong machine and I'm proud of that thing." With Hayes out and Herrin seeming to have missed his setup, it was Hayden in front and in good gap on the guys behind me. It was a lonely race after that. A race of just hitting my marks and riding a really smart race and bring home a good result for EBR." 23 DANNY ESLICK 5TH/4TH 25 DAVID ANTHONY 7TH/7TH Behind the Big Four all season has been Danny Eslick. It was no different at Miller with Eslick turning in a fifth and fourth on the weekend, but being well behind the riders ahead of him. Eslick is still searching to find the combination to ride the Jordan Suzuki to its potential. "We've been kind of battling par, where we've been all year sitting in fourth, fifth place, kind of off the pace just a little bit. I'm just missing something. Today [Sunday] we had a good shot at it. I was up in there chasing Herrin down. I think he may have been having some problems, but I was chasing him down and with about three laps to go I lost the front brakes. It was a little bit frustrating. We had a shot of putting the Jordan Suzuki on the podium and had a little bit of a mechanical issue. I had zero front brakes. I was just sitting up, using my body as a sail, rear braking and downshifting. I think I did 56s with no front brakes. A clip broke that holds the master cylinder on and the brakes got air in the line or something. We'll get it fixed up and come back strong in New Jersey." David Anthony turned in a solid weekend aboard his Motosport.com Suzuki. His sevenths match his best result of the season. "It's the best we've done all year," Anthony said. "Never happy, though. We were so close in both races to a potential top five. The lap times were there, but I just didn't string it together properly. I didn't get aggressive and didn't make passes. I sort of followed both races. We're definitely heading in the right direction, battling against the factory bikes. I definitely like New Jersey. I like Laguna too, but I never seem to do that well there. We'll have to change that at the end of the season."
