We pictured a hard-core motorcycle racer toting his road racer to Carlsbad
Raceway via a motorcycle sidecar on the cover 50 years ago. In Europe,
that was the norm. Not so much in Southern California... We had coverage
of the Trans-AMA Motocross Series from Houston. Swede Ake Jonsson
made it four wins in a row in the Texas mud. Chris Hammargren and
Heikki Mikkola finished second and third overall, respectively. Bob Grossi
took the win in the support class for 250cc motorcycles.

LOOKING BACK
The Superbikers race from Carlsbad Raceway was featured on the cover
of Cycle News 40 years ago. We pictured winner Danny "Magoo"
Chandler leading defending Superbikers Champion Steve Wise. The two
Honda riders thrilled the TV viewers with a back-and-forth scrap for the
victory... We showed you the latest bikes from Yamaha and were excited
about the new TT600 off-roader and Venture tourer... We interviewed
road racer and Formula Twot champ Sam McDonald... We reported that
Kent Howerton had left Team Suzuki for Team Kawasaki.
