The team th a t finish ed th ir d o ver- a ll, Team H ypercycle (Carry Andrew, Wende ll P hill ips a n d Ma r k T ho mas ), was d isqua lified aft er a protest was lod ged an d th ey ref use d to tea r d own their motor. T h ey had a lso lod g ed a co u nter p rotest aga ins t T eam H i- Desert / River sid e Ka wasa ki, bu t i t bac kfired o n th em w hen th e bi ke' was fo u nd co m p letely legal a n d th ey lost the i r m oney. The team th a t held seco n d a t that poi nt, Lee Flemin g/Denni s Sm it h o n the Kill er Mo r iwak i, was p lagued wi th a co u nters h aft sprocket th at refuse d to stay o n th e bike a n d the y event u ally retired wi th engine pro b- lems. Th e oth er Mo r iwa ki b ik e , th e G Pz550 pil o ted b y Walt N i tto / Whi tn ey Blak eslee, a fter p utt in g o n a good sh owi ng we n t o u t a t th e 1:20 mar k wi th a brok en rod bearin g. Ano the r fas t 550cc team, Aaron P ost / Jim Poet , went o u t a bo u t th e same tim e with a ro d stuc k through the front o f th eir motor. T eam R-Cal Racin g (Mi ke Krolick/ Frank Mazur/Steve Big anski ) h ad mov ed up to fifth place ov erall by lap 200, but crash ed with four minutes left in th e ra ce. T hey managed to sal - vag e a seventh p lace, fourth 750cc, anyway. Quite a few 450cc class riders fell off during th e race . Onl y 15 minutes into the race Ed Ferri/Dennis Rogers crashed in turn five but managed to ge t ba ck in th e race and finish ed third in th eir class. Th irt y m in ut es into th e ra ce, Howard Monise go t o ff hard in turn eigh t a nd a t this wr it ing is s till hospi- tal ized with a sha ttered a n kle a nd other in j u r ies. Bob Cobb, o f the More Right Wrist Racing T eam , fell at a lm ost th e sa me pl ace sho rt ly a fter. Bob was OK but th e bike h ad a ter- m in al case of bent front end. So they d ra g ged t he bik e back to th e pits a n d re p laced it to rej o in th e race. But i t sim p ly wa s n ot th eir da y, as th e bike was cr ash ed a gai n later. They just had to fin ish th e race, so th ey switched a few things o nto a no the r bike a n d went o u t again, o bvio u sly out o f th e race officiall y, but th ey finished the race a ll th e sa me. Even th ough they finished last. Out of a field of 48 teams, only 22 fin ish ed th e race. •
