The co u rse divided into a 20-30·20 mile clover leaf o f vari ed terrain, kept the rid ers a lert a t a fast pace. H arden, Gordon Cl ark, T .T. Mar- kl e a nd Leon Livingston were the ea r ly leaders as th ey fa nned out near- ing th e railroad undercrossing. Clark th en edged hi s Kawasaki a h ea d . H arden seem ed to be nursing hi s bik e but having th e gr een machine just ahead was more than h e co u ld bear. H e gassed it, blowing by Clark 's 250cc. Markle wa s al so on th e ga s, co mi ng in two minutes behind Har- den to s ta rt th e seco nd loop. Markle wa s foll ow ed by Cl ark , Livingston , Matt H o pe , a n d Ed Foland 's health y 125 Kawasak i. Li vingston had pitted befor e the start of the seco nd loop and was n ow fu rio us ly tryi n g to make up time. " I don 't kn ow wh o IT was," he sa id lat er , " but h e wa s putting so me smoke o n u s. H e went down th ree tim es in m y sig h t but was righ t ba ck u p a n d gone a ga in . I had to rid e by buns o ff, to pa ss h im ." H arden' s 0-38 j in x seem ed to have di sappeared in th e big Huskys whine. At th e fin ish of th e second loop h e had built a three-minute cus hi o n which he kept th e rest of the wa y. Livingston was now a minute ahead . of Cl ark a n d Karkl e, who were fol- lowed by J eff Bennett, Todd Kennedy a n d Foland. Jamie Tuck er wa s putting spaces between himself a nd Kirk Hester. who had loaned him a bik e for th e race . That' s g ra titude for ya. Still in th e sma IIbor es, Roy Basin was dicing it w ith Mike Pipkin . " I had him in th e rough stu ff," sa id Basin, " bu t he would ca tch me in the fast stu ff. H alfwa y through th e seco n d loop I didn't see him ' a ny m ore." P ipkin went down with a sp ra in ed knee a nd gav e up for a n ice pa ck at the end of th e seco nd loop. After I I fie ld secret chec ks, six of w h ich were tie-brea ker (timed to th e seco n d), the two r id ers were dead- lock ed wit h scores o f 2-174. AMA rul es requi re th a t ties be brok en by chec ki ng scores fro m the last tie- break er back . Wh en th e score cards were checked, bot h had lost six seconds at check K, so th eir scores were the n co mpared a t c hec k I, whe re Miller had j u st a two seco nd mar g in ! This year 's enduro was tamed do wn from the very toug h T uff E' Nuff Enduro of years past in a concen- trated effort by the U EA to pu t the "fun " back into 0 -37 en duros. Fro m the comment of the 340 riders wh o tackl ed th e 80-m ile cou rse, th ey were very success fu l. T he fir st loo p was designed for th e C r ide rs yet too k a t least o ne point away from everyone. A very tr ick y chec k a t 15.6 caugh t 0-37 num ber o ne ri der Grant Pal en ske t h ree m in - ut es ear ly wh ich translat ed into a 12- p oint loss. So me very well pl aced checks by event referee Cha rlie Bro wn had th e riders o n th ei r toes tryin g to outguess th e clu b.
