T
he "Legendary" Sacramento
Mile earned its moniker as
much due to its conquerors
as its place in the sport's history.
The race has long been reigned
over by only the greatest of
Mile greats, continually reward-
ing calculating experience over
adrenaline-fueled exuberance.
Entering this year's edition,
the last 40 years had only seen
seven different riders stand atop
the podium in the premier-class
at Cal Expo—in fact, the exact
same seven riders who rank 1-7
on the all-time Mile wins list:
Scott Parker, Chris Carr, Bubba
Shobert, Bryan Smith, Ricky
Graham, Jared Mees and
Jay Springsteen.
That fact had leant the race
to long victory streaks over the
years, with only Graham and
Springsteen among that list not
stringing together consecutive
race wins at Cal Expo over the
years. Recently, Smith as-
sembled seven straight, leading
directly into the four-race run
brought in by reigning Mission
SuperTwins champion Mees.
A fifth would have gone a long
way toward securing yet another
championship, as his advantage
at the top of the order wasn't
especially comfortable. Factory
