50 Years Ago JULY 4, 1972 P128 LOOKING BACK Our 1982 Yamaha XJ650 Turbo Seca test bike was featured on the cover 40 years ago. We said it had the Star Wars looks with hyper- drive punch. It sold for $4999... Johnny O'Mara and Goat Breker were the 125cc and 500cc winners, respectively, at the National Motocross round at New York's Broome-Tioga Sports Center... Terry Poovey edged out Randy Goss to win the Smoky Mountain Half-Mile in Tennessee... World Championship trials came to the U.S. It was held in Norden, California, where Belgian Eddy Lejeune took the win... Danny LaPorte won the 250cc British MXGP. 40 Years Ago JULY 7, 1982 Mert Lawwill won the Charity Newsies Half-Mile National in Columbus, Ohio, and was pictured on the cover of Cycle News 50 years ago. Lawwill passed Gary Scott late in the race and held on for the victory... We reported that Gary Jones became the first American to win overall in an AMA-FIM- sanctioned international motocross race held on American soil, in Boise, Idaho, to be exact. Jones won three motos... We tested the Penton Jackpiner 175 enduro and BMW R-60 street bike. 40 40 40 Chuck Woodford en route to victory at the Moose Run off-road race in Illinois 20 years ago. (Right) Donny Schmit dominated the German 250cc MXGP 30 years ago.
